Question re: Importing
 

I have just been thinking about buying a car when iam in the UK.
I know that if I own the car for 12 months i can licence it here as a "personal import"

here is my question, say I buy a car (lets say just for this excercise, Black EVO8) and i bring it back in say 9 months then take it into licensing 3 months later (12mths of ownership)....will that work?

Any idea of transport costs from UK?
(Obviously i will fill the bootup with spare mods :D )

What else is involved to get it licensed?

New Evo9 FQ300 in UK is $28,000 pounds. 0.42 exchange rate = A$67,000. Why would you bother?

UK aint the cheapest place in the world to buy a car.

Plus, doubt your scheme would work anyway. Usually all the paper work is done before car even leaves country of origin.

for that 12 months, i believe you actually have to be working, ie pay UK tax

I will be working, thats not a prob
but do i actually need to be in the country for the whole 12mths??

I was only using the EVO as an example (there is so much talk about them ATM)

I have seen a few 2 door STi's for around 7500-8000 Pounds

Twin Turbo Libertys (1998) for 6500 Pounds

2002 Prodrive bugeyes for 8000 Pounds etc....

1998 Wrx for 4500 Pounds

you have to be in residence of the UK for the 12 months, by that i would assume you will be paying UK tax for 12 months

you can confirm this with the Dep of Planning (Transport)

7000pounds is a fair bit
and if you're going to be travelling around, it won't be a lot of change, unless you got yourself a nice job (ie not pulling beers!).
living expenses is a killer (if you live in the major city centres, like London, Manchester, etc)

but if you manage to bring o a 22b, i'm sure you will be the envy of a few

My cousin is a Dealer prinipal of a vaxhaul yard in clacton (s/e of UK)
Will get a start there after my trek around Europe

I have Dual Nationality so i dont need a work visa and i can stay there as long as i want.

And yes i have seen a very nice, highly modded 22B.....will keep my eye on it!

9k isnt that much, around 22k Aus - for a 2door Sti thats pretty good!

You will definately need to be there for 12 months and own the car for 12 months and provide proof of purchase and log books of running expenses for the 12 months plus be able to ducument your time spent there. Also all of this stuff must be lodged prior to the car landing on Australian shores otherwise the car will be turned away or you will only be able to race/rally reg it. 9K? For that car? Where did you get that figure?
35,000.00 GBP = $82,479.01 AUD
Plus duties and suchforth, I doubt much change from $100K

when i was in the uk in 97 i priced up bringing back a car
it was 5k then just for transport, i don't think it's really that viable

also car deteriorate really really quickly there, i'm talking 3 year old cars getting serious body rust.

look into it when you're there but seriously you are better off finding yourself a decent sub 1000 pound run about that is light on fuel drive it while you are there then sell it for whatever back to a dealer before you leave. insurance will also be difficult for you to get unless you have relatives or very good mates that will be prepared to put you and your car on their policy. Insurance is also mandatory there.
