Defragged it, went into the msconfig and flicked off a few HP stuff and an exif launcher (the only things I actually had an idea about what they do, sort of) which were listed as "startup", activated the norton firewall (turns out I didnt have one on at all, I thought the norton one was on as when I got service pack2 it removed it and put the windaz one on, I faruked that off as I had norton, just though it would put the firewall on automatically..anyway
Its running about 25% better. Would do more but dont trust myself....
