Tode, go to the ASX website, there's an educational section you study. Gives plenty of insight, you'll also find plenty of educational sights on the web.

Very difficult to explain on here...it all depends on your propensity to risk and how much money you have.

Best be following palarchi's advice and go to the ASX site. Read up on that, then start asking around for what shares to buy.

Do you have a share trading account? E*Trade, NAB and CommSec all have decent ones that are low cost, and you pay brokerage per trade.

Darryl Guppy - Probably the only books you will need to read. Too many wanna-be investors writing books nowadays, so watch out for the "get rich quick" type of share trading books.

Got all 4 D. Guppy books sitting here. Happy to lend them to you for a few weeks if you like.

As above, ASX website is a bit of an information goldmine.

Sanford Securities is my choice of online broker. But there's a million of them including E Trade and Commsec. Each has its diamonds and let downs. Search around, some will kill you in brokerage fees, where some will step the brokerage down and get you on monthly fees. There are plenty of brokers and plenty of packages to suit most needs from a day trader to a long term investor.

Dont have nothing atm. I assume its advisable to go thru a broker rather than freelance it. But which broker?
Got some money to throw, and i'm thinking of just topping it up every payday or something?

will check the ASX thanks

vyper: those books would be great.

Going through a broker will help you get started, but throwing yourself in the deep end and learning that way will help you to work out how the market operates. Putting all your trust in a broker is unadviseable.

Even if they are dishing out tips, it's up to you to follow it up, do the research and analysis yourself before commiting to a certain stock. Anyone can give the "hot tip", why and how they got it is a different story - 80% of the time it's an ego thing and hardly worth pursuing :) However, a broker's advice would be handy in guiding you to set up a portfolio.

What do you want to achieve? Long term capital gains, short term speculative/high risk investments, income from dividends (Not that likely with smaller portfolios). Every strategy is different. As I said, check out the Guppy books, great to put you on the right path in all these areas.

Remember textbooks advise 'buy low sell high'

Try this web-site too:

If you only have a couple grand to invest, most full service brokers won't bother, all too busy at the moment. Online brokers are really your only option, unless you tip into a new float, but plenty of crap being listed at the moment.

do it yourself online, unless you want someone to watch your stocks and give you tips etc. If you want to watch them and do all that stuff yourself then set up an account online, I go through commsec and pay $30 each transaction. As Vyper said you can go online and check out each different option, there are so many, so make sure you know what you want to do yourself( eg day trader, couple times a month, long term etc etc)
I also have quite a few book that I am happy to lend you,
check them out here:
