PSU Recommendations for system build?

Hi to all the PC gurus on here... I know there's a fair few in the game :).

About to build a fairly high end system for my son as follows:

MSI P6N Diamond nVidia nForce 680I SLI Chipset LGA775 with
Quad Core Q6600 CPU, 4GB DDR2-800, 2 x nVidia 8800GT with 512MB on each.

I'm thinking that my spare 450W PSU may not make the grade, is there any formula to go by which would determine what size PSU to go for? I have heard it's possible to hook up a PSU that has TOO much power, is this true? What would be an "ideal" power rating for the above?

Informed replies preferred :D thanx in advance...

haha u will need a good PSU to run that at a good stabe voltage.... also if ya want to clock!

You will also need a PSU that supports SLI to get the most outta the 8800GT's

Cooler Master seems to be the best performing one out there at the moment

No.

The PSU is only going to supply what is needed. I had a 650w running a Pentium 3 system on test. So alls good.
My recommendations for brands (from personal exp) are
-Thermaltake
-Silverstone

As for the output, I would probably go for something 650w or above.

If you do select a PSU that is much to large for the application it will not run as efficient.

I would recommend a 700W SLI for that machine

In the end, if you spend heaps of money on a real power PSU that you dont need, then you've wasted money.

As mr_psi has said, a 700w PSU should be adequate (as I said, 650w+)

Try this, not 100% accurate, but it can help to give you a vague idea.

(mine requires approx. 590w of power according to this)

Thanx for all the input & links ppls... as usual the wealth of info here is useful to call upon from time to time.

That calculator thingy says I only need 442W !!! Hmmmm.....

Blown a few PSUs in my time and I'e become convinced that quality is the better way to go, (within reason). Not gonna spend $50 buying one, but not gonna spend $400 retail either. A Silverstone 750W SLi has caught my eye, will prob go with that.

Dont forget there is PEAK power and TRUE power.

Need to read the label on the PSU its self.

Its not all about Wattage the AMPS play a very important part as well.

im going to build a similar system, using a iCute 600W PSU runs no worries

Lovely PSU's i currently running their 850 strider model. Modular (most are these days) very nice and does the job, going sli you are gonna need a bit more 850 should more than do it for you :).
