US Import Gurus - help wanted...

Hi all,

This is definitely a non-wrx discussion topic. I’m looking at treating myself to a good quality 69 Mustang Mach 1, but have been toying with the idea of sourcing a late model Mustang GT as I do like the creature comforts of a modern car.

Can anyone give me a brief lowdown on the process of sourcing either of these models and importing them from the US, or put me in touch with someone who could help.

Have any of you guys done something similar? Can it be done smoothly and within a budget, and is their much money to be saved as opposed to buying here in Aus?

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Best time to buy Yank tanks with the good exchange rate! (1AUD = 0.94USD)
Make sure you only buy cars from the West Coast! Only for the fact that a majority of cars wont be rust buckets as opposed to buying from east.

If you buy any car, you choose a reputable shipping company (i use Emo-Trans http://www.emotrans.com/ ) to take care of taxes, customs duties etc you would have it then packed into a container in LA then have it shipped to Freo.

So roughly a good example of a '69 'stang around 25k USD = 30,000AUD
You will only pay GST on the purchase price, container and any associated fees be sure to budget circa 8-10k AUD
If you do find the car you like and paid a deposit etc.. best to get an Import Approval from Customs before you start anything further. Here is a link to the PDF: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/safety/bulletin/pdf/VSB10_Form.pdf

With the later model cars, its a bit waste of money especially when you are within the 15 year rule so any car after 1989 has to be converted = extra cost.. Best to stick with '60s cars and you're laughing.. its not hard to drive LHD at all.

California is as Muggz said a good place to start but the whole of the southwest part of US often have some good old yank tanks avail in good nick. My mate imported this baby from Dallas Texas late last year (changed wheels since then) and had no trouble at with it, still LHD and got it over the pits and licenced with ease apparently. 455 cubic inch Yank Tank cruiser and it sounds mint. He spent $26K on the purchase plus freight, duty, etc and took 16 weeks from time he saw the car and bought it to delivery in Perth.
