A truck dealer I know rather well was at a dealer conference in Melbourne. He stays a day after the conference to catch up with a mate. They go to a random chinese restaurant. He notices the head dudes from hino / isuzu / ud / mitsubishi also eating at a table in the restaurant. Next day memorandum from hq saying that all truck prices are going up 5%. Every rand gets the same price rise.

If you dont think that there is collusion in the market place now you are living under a rock.

I think you'll find that passanger car manufacturers are a little different.

I'd love to see ford, toyota, holden, mazda etc sit at the same table....let alone discuss pricing with their competitiors.

Also funny to note that a 2007 used RAV4 is $5000 dearer than a 2008 RAV4 brand new off the lot at the moment..... New car prices have been reduced to try to stimulate sales.

Are you aware that those companies source components from the same manufaturers? Transmissions, basic chassis and suspension etc are cross supplied to those brands.

Not to mention Spring brakes, drums and axles etc.

Wow, I'd love to know how you can believe this crap.

If Holden raised the price of a Commodore Exec by $10k and they were still selling well, Ford would follow suit shortly thereafter.

They don't need to 'sit down at a table together' to collude on prices.

Actually on that thought, why are the exported Commodores cheaper overseas than the local market, given they are made here? Isn't that just price fixing?

I see Gm have recieved 9.4 billion $us so far. Toyota is down 1 million units, bentley is shutting down for 7 weeks.
Subaru has dropped the impreza range by $1500.

"Free Money" ---> Not exactly.

Manufacturers have been give interest free loans with conditions:

1. Supply and build at least 1 hybrid vehicle by 2010
2. Provide all financial data to the US government
3. Reduce loss leader vehicles (low sellers)
4. Ensure workforce stability
5. Repay loans by 2025
6. Restructure core business units
7. Supply affordable low end vehicles

Everyone is saying FORD hasn't had any loans yet, this is wrong. They have accepted $4 billion US on semi secured loans (low interest), to avoid being locked into a governmect contract.

Where as the other 2 have loans interest free with conditions.
