Default Power Supply Fault - Cisco 3550 PoE Switch

Anyone here good at electronics? Got a Cisco 3550 24Port PoE Switch which has a dead power supply. Had the run around and found it difficult to get a replacement.

Out of warranty.

Basically, i've got the power supply out and i can see where a resistor has popped and i can see the burn mark. I'm under the assumption if i can solder/connect a new one in there, all will be good?

This is a $3grand+ switch so it's worth the repair.

Case of beer in it for someone who can repair it.

Email me on richard.smith@lion-nathan.com and i can send you a photo of the PSU if you think you can sort it.

Cheers

Hi Richard,

Electronics can be a mystery sometimes. Often the component that has failed, is not the culprit for the breakdown. but it was overloaded with current due to a malfuntion somewhere else on the circuit board.

definitely replace the blown resistor, but just remember there could be other faults with the circuit board.

Could there have been any reason for the blown resistor? Was the switch working on a hot day? covered in dust or towel or clothing?

Steve.

Yes they are old, our standard switch is now a 3560G - Got about 25 of these on site, Dual 4506's as a core, 3600 series router.

Will upload a pic later.

Steve.
Not sure why it died, got an alert on a Saturday that it was offline. Went to where it was physically located (Comms cabinet with another switch) connected to a UPS point. Unsure of the reason for death.

Our IP Phones are all POE but there wasn't a significant amount of load going through it. This is the first Cisco PSU i have seen die.

No dust, no towels - Comms cab rack mounted.

Blown resistor is just visible down the back, hard to see. Will get a better one.
