Making an offer in a dealer

Hey Guys, i was wondering if you have any idea or experience to bargain the most when buying car in a dealer? i am particulary interested in this one car which is advertised for $24.990 and i checked from the redbook, the value for trade is is from 19.000-22500. depend on the kms and condition of course. what is best price to start bargaining with those nasty dealership and the salesman of course :D

thanks

Depends on what you've got to trade in (if anything) how much you can lay down on the spot, whether you want them to organise any finance for you, the rarity of the vehicle, etc...

Start low, offer like $20k cash and go from there :P

u can only try, but the only way is to fill out the contract signing that u will buy if they say yes. in other words u gotta show the money :)

make sure u tell them there are plenty other cars u are looking at the same time. and dont look too desperate. 20k .. maybe ..

Pffft, it's not like he's out to do you any favours mate ;) I wouldn't worry about what the salesman could think.

If you had cash, it would be GREAT fun!! Lets face it the majority of car dealers will do almost anything for a sale. Play them for all its worth instead of letting them play you.

Start low, leave your number and when they say no, walk away. Within 6 hrs THEY WILL call you and try to work something about :D

Last time I used a "I got the cash with me right now" tactic, I was a little pissed off when the salesman replied,

"How else are you gonna pay? *snigger*"

Obviously I walked out of there, even though I did have the cash on me there and then, $30000 in neatly stacked bills in a manila envelope.

Should have kept my composure and showed him some of the cash and then go, "See, here's your commission. I'm putting it back into the envelope and taking it elsewhere."

A friend bought a 04 last year for $37000 new!
Walked in with $37000 cash in a bag said ...
" thats what i want, here is the cash. $37k is all im offering, take it or leave it!"

They said " Cant you read the price, it says $40,450!!"

He said " Do you want to feed your family this month or not?"
And then left his card and walked out.
10mins later got a call.. " hey mate, we have the car all ready for you. Feel free to come by and see us!"

Tips are to buy at the end of the month. IE: 29th or 30th, as car yards and dealers always need to get a certain quota in order to get their monthly bonus. So they will negotiate to get that sale and more often than not, drop some $$$ on the car .
For a car thats worth $24k.... there would definately be a margin on the price, so they would of prob bought it for $19k leaving a $3k buffer for negotiations. (taking into account that they need to make some profit off it)

Id offer $21k. Let them know you know the red book value etc. If they say "no way", then leave and never look back :) There are always wrx's going cheap now-a days :)

If it's on the lot for 24k they probably paid more like 16-17k for it. There's HEAPS of margin in them.

I'd offer no more than 20k for it - if they laugh or don't take you seriously, ask to deal directly with the sales manager.

Another tactic that i've seen work is to ask them what they'd get as a commission if they sell it to you for 20k vs 24k, and then offer to make up the difference in cash out the back :)

Walk in with a blank cheque, write a price on it and show them. They'll be likely to take it if you are willing to give it to em there and then (pending clearance, of course)
