gps units
 

Hey guys i am trying to help my dad out with getting some information about gps units im just wondering what people can recommend, my dad is buying my mum a gps and he wants to get her either a garmin navman or tomtom and will need it to have a big screen like a 4.3" or 4.6" i think he was saying he has seen around

my mum is out on the road almost all day so needs sompthing good and easy to use hes not to fased bout the price just yet but obviously doesnt want to spend mass amounts of money on sompthing if he doesnt have to.

any information would be appreciated and i would also like to no as well seing as i might get one as well

Garmin maps are rubbish - prefer TomTom ofr maps

Seriously think about getting a Uniden one, I have one and it shits all over the others in terms of userbility. Anyone who uses it has no problems with it. Much easier to use than the others.

This is going to be one of those threads where everyone will rave about their "x" brand being better than "y" brand. They are as good as each other. More coin = more functions, bigger screen generally. I (2 satnavs ago), went TomTom (GO710, then GO720, now GO730), based upon Navman holders not being able to hold fast to the windscreen. (Done with an independant road test...). :D

I went TomTom as "I" thought the display/userability was clearer/easier, Ive been in friends cars with Navmans, (4.3" screens), and I just think the TomTom is a better unit. GO930 is top of the line, but if you dont need all the bells and whistles, (wank), one of the lower models will do fine.

That said, they changed the windscreen mount from the 710 (awesome - click lock) to the 730 (shit - press on clamp), that never used to hold to the screen. However, TomTom listened to the consumer, and bought out a revised, 710-like windscreen mount. That ive had for several months, and it hasnt moved.

But the NavMan V TomTom thing, is a bit like Holden/Ford, Evo/Rex, etc. Just get ya mum to have a look at both, side by side instore, and make a call. :)

GPS are one of those things that few of us ever own more than 1 of. As a
consequence everyone loves to recommend the type they own.

Best advice is to have a look at a few shops, and also check out a few friends
units and make up your own mind.

I am biased as I have owned 3 Garmins, but as mentioned before, never used
anything else so can't comment how it compares to others. I am used to the
way they work, so will continue to buy them.

It has current 2009 Nt maps on it.

I don't have an issue with the Garmin maps at all, plus it has inbuilt blue tooth/sms reader/ voice dialing & Fm transmitter (hear your phone call through the cars speakers).

All new units have a voucher for 1 free copy of any new maps released within 18 months of purchase....downloadable from Garmin directly.

I use a Navman MY30 for work. Got that cool place-click-lock thing Brent mentioned. Not a 4.x" screen like he wants to get her but they had some of them there when I got mine. He'll be looking at the $320 to $400 range for anything worthy. Pretty much all the well known brands are of a similar price so it comes down to which one she'll find easiest to use. Just make sure that if you want to register it to get updated maps in the future it isn't going to cost more than a new gps LOL.

I quite like the Mio's.. I've had Navman and Mio, and the Mio craps all over it, both in accuracy and ease of use.

I trialled Navman and Garmin for work. Uniden won hands down for me. Also Uniden come standard with a good windscreen mount...not like the flimsy ones that come with the others. The reason I brought the uniden was because out of the testing I did for work Price/userbility/features the Uniden was best.
