Computer Guru's? Where do you shop?

Hey all,
So I am in the market for a new Laptop and have been looking on the Dell site and spec'd up a computer to my liking. My question is, are there any Local shops that can build a fairly serious laptop for around the same money?

To give you an idea, I want something with 8gb ram, 1gb video card, 500gb storage (possibly in 2 slots so I can upgrade to a solid state later) and a computer that also runs the new I7 processor with at least a 6mb cache.

Looking at around the 4000 mark.

Cheers
Dan

Nah, you don't want one of those OEM laptops that some local computer shops do. They are clunky, driver support is crap, warranty support is harder due to low volumes and are a waste of time imho.

Just stick to the usual Dell, HP, Asus etc.

Not sure on local shops. I get my gear from a mate who runs a business over east but as always with Dell spend some time looking for discount coupons in google.
Also failing that is it well worth ringing them to talk them down a bit as well. They always have room to move price wise for phone sales.

Shop around mate, stick to the better known brands, even if it costs a little more. Getter better hardware & software support (drivers etc.), I got mine from Cybershop in Perth, they were having a sale and got a high end spec one for a good price.
Where as I got a good price on a laptop at Harvey Norman from my oldies, which is not the first place I would have gone for a good price on a laptop. :p

I can highly recommend Toshiba laptops, Ive got one, and I know a few that have them, no complaints what so ever.

Yeah seems to be the consensus!

Seeing as you want an i7 looks at Dell imho.

If you can do away with a slightly lower spec processor, MacBook Pro.

Because... everyone's a DJ on a MacBook Pro!

Ordered over the phone...got a hundred bucks off! Better than a kick in the pants!

My mate just got a new Panasonic Toughbook, Awesome Unit, doubles as a tablet, has the full car kit for it also, no idea what they are worth.
