Refund on cans & bottles in South Australia

While in South Australia last week.I was very impressed with how clean the country roads were with the 10 cent refund on cans & bottles. People out collecting them through out the day.

I wonder why we dont have this in WA ?

the vendors (ie coke/schweppie) strongly oppose it, as they bare the responsibility for funding the disposal/refunds.

I see , but it would be placed on the purchase price from the start.

Wonder how many cans you would need to fund a drive over east? :D

I remember years ago ( Talking 10-15 at least) There used to be a big thing at the Markets at Gosnells, the train based one. You put a can in, get 5 cents back. I wonder how many times it got broken into before they removed it

Damn Noomen!!!

Back in the days of 1 litre glass softdrink bottles 'I think they were 1ltr', you use to get 15/20cents when you returned them. We use to make some good money on weekends collecting them up; so much so we carried a wheelbarrow around with us.

I think bringing this to WA would be a great idea.

Pitty the ole man doesnt drink as much as he use to as this would have easily supported a mortgage on a house.

Funny you say about this, I was suprised that we dont have this. I remember my first road trip out of Perth and I was shocked at all the cans/bottles laying on the road sides. I think its a good idea like they have in SA but this is WA so maybe 2020 we will get it sorted.

You do notice a world of difference on the drive over. I remember when I first shifted to WA and drove across it was almost instantaneously noticeable when crossing the border.

Yep.. the manufacturer would whack 10c on the price of each bottle, and Coles/Woolworths would jack the price by $1.

nang3 29-01-2010 09:18 AM

haha yeh cause they cant absorb 10c into their 700% profit margin as it is FFS

Not quite mate. A 600ml bottle of Coke is just over 3.00 in SA. Almost same same as what you would pay here

BALISTC 29-01-2010 12:04 PM

Yeah thats in SA.. but if that was introduced in WA, thats what the retailers here would do.
