DVD to AVI
 

Hey All

I just got myself an awesome new pc that has heaps of storage....

I would like to convert all my dvd's to avi to reduce size but not loose any quanlity which I then will create a Movie Libary on my pc to run in my theatre.

Any good programs or process's to acheive this?

I use Divx 7 converter and you get to choose from a wide selection
of quality options.

Hey JDM - i have used about 3 progrmas now and all have been bad quality. I will try Divx 7.

The problem is DVDshrink has so many errors these days like not enough memory etc....hope they update it soon

Put simply, when you shrink the format you are going to reduce the quality, so dependant on the movie and the size of your home theatre screen you may actually go backwards.

To see what I mean condense a high CGI oriented movie 'like say for example Avatar, 2012, or Finding Nemo'. You can fix this problem by cropping but why would you want to do that when home theatre is all about bigger and louder :D

What I would suggest doing is converting your DVD Library from DVD9 'which is untouched retail', to DVD5 'where you basically strip all unwanted audio formats, directors commentary, any unwanted extras and subtitles from the original source', so you retain all the quality of movie with all the desirable options 'such as 5.1 Audio etc'.

There are some great free-ware programs that aren't bloated which are perfect for this.

I would suggest:

[URL="http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_video/convert_video/cinema_craft_encoder.cfm"]CinemaCraft Encoder ('CCE')[/URL]

Note: CCE would be my software of choice for converting DVD to DVDRiP

Please don't tell me you paid for this, DVDShrink was a freeware solution for whats called 'one click', video editing. This software hasn't been updated for years, with the developer now working for Nero.

Sorry to hijack thread, but how about if you want to do the opposite?

change an AVI/MOV to DVD?

Do you guys know a piece of software to do that?

Great drag and drop program that will do all the work for you. Will you be joining files together or just converting one file?

VSO Converx is the best for the other way around

Have a look at Format Factory. Convert anything to anything.

Also for home theatre use, have a look at x264 codecs (it's like the blu ray version of divx).

All free, good for downloading youtube videos, converting movies to put on your iphone etc
