Free trade details of US made products?
Hi all,
I've been trying to find some simple information on what it would mean for import duties/fees etc etc from importing products made in the US and all I can find is pages and pages of jibberish! Does or has anyone had experiences in importing bulk products into Australia that are made in the US and know the benefits of the free trade agreement between our countries. Also how to go about getting any concessions and what documentation is needed to prove the items are in fact US made. I'm contemplating importing quite a few things in but need all the info so I can work out whether it is viable or not. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Wayne

Wayne have you been here yet http://www.export.gov/FTA/australia/index.asp
The concept of "originating" goods can be a complicated one. The details are in the text of the U.S.-Australia FTA. Details regarding how Australia determines whether goods are originating can be found at the Australia Customs Service website, www.customs.gov.au. Click on the following links for information on how to determine if your product qualifies for preferential tariff treatment, how to use the tariff elimination schedule, how to document origin, and frequently asked questions about the Agreement. Wayne,
Will you be importing it privately or under your ABN? I work for a well known freight forwarder here in Perth so just flick me a PM if you need any assistance. :-) All you really need to obtain is a certificate of origin/manufacturers declaration and your good to go. |

Thanks for that guys, yeah the guidelines are very broad so looks like
I'm going to be researching for a bit longer. I'm currently going to be importing personally but will eventually be using an ABN if it all works out the way I want it too. The items I'm looking at importing are aftermarket vehicle parts which are produced in the US so not sure if these will be eligible items in the FTA. Oh and Mitch the items are generally shipped via FedEx express so any help on keeping the shipping costs down but fast would be greatly appreciated, I will contact you when the time comes. Cheers, Wayne

I've found the following but still need to confirm details of which
particular items comply. *1.7. Certain US originating passenger motor vehicle goods have phasing rates of customs duty imposed. The rates are 8% (2005), 6.5% (2006), 5% (2007), 3% (2008), 1.5% (2009) and Free (2010). So hopefully it's 0% customs duties!
