I wonder if you could rig up a retic solenoid to a motion censor so late at night the sprinklers come on when ever someone enters your yard.

Thats a good idea, you can get a single sprinkler head with a motion detector from pet shops or ebay, designed to scare off cats, dogs etc
The enthusiasm of late night visitors would certainly be quenched with a cold shower.

It seems the busier the nighttime pedestrian traffic the more the trail of destruction, we had similar issues in my old place, moving further away from night life activities eased our problems but we still have theft and damage even on the outskirts of town, you can never escape from it, only lessen the occurrence.

Dogs and telling the cops every little thing that happens will be a winner. They might not do anything at first. But eventually they'll get sick of you and sort it out (hopefully).

At least in the meantime a few of them get bitten and maybe they'll give up? Trust me, no one's gonna want to come back after being ripped apart by a Doberman or Rotti...
