Is there a media ban on the word "aboriginal"??
It seems as though a few things have changed over the years, like this article for instance http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/breaking/8205041/police-hunt-thugs-over-attacks/
the suspects are named as "dark skinned", all of us know that they were aboriginal but why does the media refuse to use this word when naming suspects. When it comes to other things the Abos have done, ie some art or fighting for land etc the word is used. Perhaps someone in the Law industry can answer this? Mind you not longer than 5-10 years ago crime stoppers/newspapers widely named suspects as "of aboriginal appearance". |
on 9 news last night about the guy that got bashed in th west perth park the perps were described as aboriginal
|
hmmm channel 7/the west australian are owned by the same ppl. I wonder whether that has anything to do with this?
|
I've got some old local newspapers from the early 60's and they were called natives then.
|
I prefer the liberal use of the word nigga

Maybe they were African? If I was from Sudan and shanked some lacky in the street and some journalist labelled me aboriginal, I'd be offended. |
It would be because Perth is more multicultural these days, so dark skinned could describe a perp of any one of a number of ethnic backgrounds.

Non-reflectives always work for me.

"Aboriginal" is as descriptive as "White" hence discriminatory.
"Indigenous Australian" and "Caucasian" - the media is a useless example of what is "legal" or "correct" or . . . even worse "politically correct". Aboriginal is an attempt to put all indigenous Australians into one group - imagine if all Caucasian Europeans tribes were labelled as "Euro's". I'm sure the Greeks, French, Germans and the Italians and ... well ... Flame away . . . |
