Solar Power

Hi there,

Does anyone have a solar power system on their house? There are some pretty crazy cheap deals going at the moment but I'm only just starting to look at what's involved. There was one in yesterday's paper but they want you to sign over your RECs, and I'm not sure of the implications of doing this?

Also, what's a decent size for your average house? I have heard that the 1.5KW systems that most people seem to be flogging are not big enough, and that you really need 3KW to make it pay?

Cheers,

Wrxpc

whats RECs?

as far as I know, a 1.5kw will make a dent on the bill, but not let you become self-sufficient (or near it) a larger system will almost reduce your bill to nothing, and sometimes even put energy back onto the grid, getting you some sort of rebate.

I'm also interested in doing this, but not sure how to go about it really. Are the govt. rebates still happening?

rebates are still in place and I too am interested in this subject as I am building a new family home

I have just signed up to one of these systems, you get the system cheaper as the seller claims the RECS for themselves, however if you claim the RECS yourself you will get a bigger discount, but there is heaps of paperwork to do.

For example I was quoted $5000 for a 3KW inverter system with 8X190KW panels with the seller claiming the RECS, if I claimed the RECS myself the same system would cost $3922.

I'm led to believe that the govt rebate ends at the end of June this year.

Hope this helps.

cheers

Thanks, can you tell us who you signed up with? And why you went with them?

I'm looking for a system too but the thing that concerns me are fly-by-night companies which offer 25year warranties or whatever but probabaly unlikely to be around in 2 years

I went with True Value Solar, did my research, they all have internet sites where you can compare.

They were prepared to negotiate.

I went with Swan Energy last year, and I recommend them. They used German 200kw panels and a quality inverter. They're mostly commercial but do domestic as well.

We put a 1.4kw system up to take advantage of the rebate, which was expiring at the time, but we're looking to extend it to 3kw in the near future.

It probably knocks 20% off the bills but we use a lot of power. 5 PCs running most of the time, a pool pump, and the aircon is on all day because I work from home.
