Centralising Foxtel/HTPC/Stereo etc at home
 

Hi guys,

I'm wanting to set up a something where all my shared items are centrally located and every tv watching them just has an infrared repeater or something similar to operate it.

I'd also like to share everything at HD level, not RCA's. I've seen setups that have HDMI over ethernet cables, but I have no idea really what to do.

Items shared would be:
Foxtel
HTPC
iTunes music from PC (ideally I'd like an Apple Airport solution to this where you can pick which speakers are on)

So does anyone have any ideas?

How many TV's are you looking to share content to?

What sort of budget are you allocating?

HDMI over CAT starts getting exxy + you need a powerpoint each end for dedicated power supply. You can run HDMI 30m without requiring HDMI-CAT conversion. I just ran a 10m cable recently from my front theatre to my master bedroom, so the PS3 can be used remotely (bluetooth remote) and dont have to putup with the noise of the unit, or having it on the dresser.

At the moment, 4-5 tv's.

I might have to measure up the actual lengths as I thought hdmi failed over 10m. If it is ok for 30m, that would be the cheapest option.

Budget is whatever it is. I'm addicted to TV, so it is my drug habit money.

The biggest problem I could come up with (assuming you dont all want to watch the same thing on tv at the same time) is not video but the sound.

Anyways you are a smarter man than me at this stuff so let me know how you go.

There was some media center software that I used to use that was able to stream over network and things like that - or are you simply looking to clone the display to many TV's.


HDMI Is not guarantueed to work over 10m. We used HDMI over Cat6 for our new TechniQ Store to play from the back room to the LCD mounted in the glass at the front as the standard HDMI wouldnt carry the signal.

I am not aware of us using any power source for the transmitter or receiver.

Cloning the display to multiple TV's is the go.

It's only me and the missus, so the idea is to share the 1 foxtel box to all the rooms. Only watching in one of the rooms, so multiple channels isn't an issue.

If I can get this working over HDMI then I can clone the same idea for HTPC, PS3 etc etc.

Searching the Googles, this is pretty much what I want. Can just run some Cat6.

Yup id say that is a good place to start mate.

If you have a Starserve unit, and modulators will do this, this is always used to distribute foxtel through out the house.

an also pass ir through the coax.
