There is an EBII with XR6T motor and 6 speed in the current issue of Zoom. Nice and clean with original lines. 420 rwkw according to the spec sheet

for a 23 yo in his backyard, his done really well!

the I6 turbo barra has proved a great conversion engine for a heap of forgotten cars without the need to shoehorn an eight to reap performance gains. last few issues of zoom has shown this lateral thinking!
From what you've mentioned above the only viable project would be a Torana 'pref A9X, GTR XU1, SLR 5000', good luck finding one though :p

Where's the Ford XY/XA/XB love?
Buy my Torana!:D it needs someone to love it again.

^^^ Please fit round headlights to that Escort.

What about a Duratec engine in the MK1 Esky? Seems to be the rage at present.

Love the 1977 celica idea! Was a very nice one at Big Als poker run last week!

mrclubspecevo4 25-04-2011 08:52 PM

sorry for the thread revival but I have a few questions:

can you think of a readily available and affordable car that has a seperate body/chasis? If it goes/handles well to start with then this is a bonus.

could one be had for under a thousand dollars?

also, I saw a guy drive past my house today with an old rwd corolla on a trailer. it looked like a track car/drifter and had a cage. What are the requirements with this (at an entry level) as I am sure the cage would be worth more than the car if it came from one of the regular manufacturers.

Holden HQ ute or panel van?
Under a grand...yes.:)
Handling.....um, no.:o

Pretty much anything made this century with a chassis is a truck or heavy 4WD.

Anything old with a chassis either didn't handle (anything American including Corvette), was butt ugly (Toyota Crown), or costs a fortune (Austin Healy etc)

mrclubspecevo4 25-04-2011 11:37 PM

cheers Doug.

why can't we buy cheap TVR's????:)

perhaps an ae71 rolla then.....

dtrally 26-04-2011 12:06 AM

TVR is a terrible car.
AE71 / KE70 would be a fun project if you can find one that's not too rusty.
Perhaps look into whether Al from AM Auto's has sold the unfinished BEAMS engined KE55 project they had?

207 de 26-04-2011 09:50 AM

SR20DET in a Mk2 escort would be my choice.

I have a 79 ghia with sierra 5 speed, 2L, webber/extractors etc. Its still pretty crap but if I ever get rich and bored, I'll do something with it.

For the cost though, I think im better off getting a big turbo and FMIC on my sti.

Pablo668 26-04-2011 11:24 AM

Unless I'm mistaken the old Toyota Crowns were sought after by hot rodders because of the full chassis on them. (basically chuck out everything else). They could put any body/engine/everything else combination on them.

I was thinking an E30 beamer with wrx engine/running gear. That would be cool I think.

I'm fairly sure that they used these chassis for the cobra kit cars as well.

clubspec07 26-04-2011 04:06 PM

datto coupe with crate R34 engine all wheel drive...
and a stand alone fuel management system. not a bad way to spend 10 grand.
After you put about 15 grand in it, or more and if we have to, overnight parts from Japan.
this will decimate all..!!
LoL

Yeah, the shit, cheap ones did. But they looked wrong and were never as good as the ones on fabricated chassis with Jag suspension.

AWDmoke 03-05-2011 12:12 PM

2 door Cortina (UK import) mated to a Ford turbo 6.
Certainly something different, if you can find one.
