Goin' Fishin... Help!

Hey folks,

Well, i moved to Aus back in 2008. Prior to that I lived in the UK... From the age of 5 to 25 i was an avid angler, helped by the fact my parents owned a tackle business and my dad was the chairman of the local angling club. I loved nothing more than spending my weekend's at the local river/lake fishing for all kinds of fish..

Now i live in Aus, and have settled down i'm starting to get the urge to go fishing again. A few of my mates from work are also keen to give it a crack, and have a basic grasp of whats happening. I guess what i'm wondering is, can you guys give me a rough idea of what I need as started gear? I currently have an 8ft beach/boat rod, a tackle box, a set of pliers and some other little bits and bobs. I don't want to go crazy, i just want enough gear to head down to the jetty/beach/rocks and sling a line in...

I've never really jigged/spun (apart from the odd Pike fishing expedition in the UK), and my knowledge of lures/plastics is pretty limited. But this is the style of fishing i would like to concentrate on if i can. What lures do you use? what setup do you use (3 way swivels/booms/patternoster etc) any info would be greatly received.

I'm not flush, in fact i'm trying to achieve this on a pretty tiny budget, but i'd like to have the basics before i head out for the 1st time.. and i know there are some pretty keen anglers here.

Anyway... /CSB. I'd love some input :)

Given its summer and you wanna give lures a crack, I'd personally recommend trying some metal twisties and poppers for tailor from a rock groyne/jetty/beach.

Something like this?

What is your budget? In the past few months I have actually been contemplating selling my Bream fishing outfit which contains a good selection of hard bodied lures, softies, jigheads, a very decent rod/reel combo as well as a spare combo (still decent but not worth as much as the main outfit).

pm me if you want more details :)

edit: probably not suitable for jetty/rock/beach. Perhaps ignore unless you're going to venture along the Swan...

Jump on one of the local fishing forums/websites and make use of the knowledge there by searching and browsing.

Western Angler: Forum
Hotbite: Hotbite Fishing Forum Western Australia
They also have active Classifieds sections.

Oceanside Tackle, The Tackleshack & Bluewaters have knowledgeable staff.

Heaps of online stores, i personally like motackle.com.au

The Adventure Bound site is handy too

Happy learning and fishing.

Just dont get caught by the rangers. Old locals will also have a go at you if they catch you taking them even though they are introduced and smash every native before they have a chance.

Shoot REXXXED a PM. Between breakfast lunch and tea, he's usually fishing.

REXXXED 19-01-2012 11:23 AM

^^2 actually :p

mrclubspecevo4 20-01-2012 06:31 PM

It looks to be a nice warm night, anyone keen on a bit of a fish?

Swan/Canning River?
Jetty or shore?

Sam: If your mrs has a sister for me, you can bring her too :)

REXXXED 20-01-2012 07:04 PM

Ha Toni! Both sisters are unfortunately taken
Would love to come but night in with the mrs tonight. I reckon the beach would be a better option to tonight to be honest. Perfect weather for it.

MY99GT 20-01-2012 07:16 PM

I'm heading out tomorrow night with a mate from work.. just gonna go along to Mullaloo or Ocean reef and find a quiet spot to sit and relax with a rod in the water.. Ordered some bits from BCF just to get me going then once i'm set i'll think about either bringing over my gear from the UK (99.9% coarse fishing gear), and topping up the sea-fishing stuff as and when.

Appreciate all the info and PM's so far, i'll be doing plenty of reading and researching tomorrow before heading out tomorrow evening. But all in all i'm just there for fun and to have a relaxing few hours out-doors :)

reconus 20-01-2012 07:18 PM

gona be up at hillary's, took some advice from mr sam. if i dont catch any fish its ur fault and not the fact that im absolutely shit at fishing

MY99GT 20-01-2012 07:23 PM

lol i'm heading out with my Jarvis walker rod, no tackle (borrowing from a mate until my stuff arrives) and will probably spend the night jigging into open water.. not because it'll catch me fish.. but because it will relax the shit outta me.

REXXXED 20-01-2012 08:07 PM

I told Farnam on the marina rock wall facing ocean side. If he doesn't respond (he might have already left) PM or text me and I can flick you his number

mrclubspecevo4 20-01-2012 09:59 PM

Went for a bit on the northern side. There was a lot of weed :( but it was a beautiful night.

Couldn't sport Farnam.

May do an early morning trip back there tomorrow.

I was half expecting to see you mate, Lee was telling me he was going to bring you for backup haha.

I didn't realise you were an electrician too.

red dragon2002 20-01-2012 10:49 PM

Ye mate all those times I was suppose to come along but they didn't need my help. Was lee over today?

Ye they are fishing fanatics, they have a genisis fishing specific boat

MY99GT 21-01-2012 08:33 AM

Yeah Lee came too as the other job they had fell through I think? Did an awesome job (as always) installing new plug sockets, phone socket and fixing my outside lights!

Will def be recommending them to anyone, fcuking nice blokes too.

miss_petepie 21-01-2012 11:07 AM

we are heading out on the 25th on the beach at port kennedy. we stay there til late at night. welcome to join us if you want :) we go out heaps and welcome to join us at any time :)

MY99GT 22-01-2012 09:04 AM

Well spent a few hours at Ocean Reef marina last night. Caught a few port Jackson's and lost a couple of bigger fishing in the process. Had an absolute blast (apart from the fun of clambering over the rocks with arms full of tackle lol) .

Already planning my next trip to Pinneroo point (spelling) to try something from the shore!

Ko[R]uPt 23-01-2012 08:03 PM

Patches of weed around pinnaroo atm, was down there Sunday arvo. Still very fishable though

MY99GT 23-01-2012 08:10 PM

Yeah i was getting some weed issues from Ocean Reef, but its cool.. it was a good test of my casting lol
