I have been itching for 6 years for a pizza oven. I have wanted one prior to building my barrel bbq. some of the social member of p-wrx have experience.
So in the theme of DIY I have documented with some pictures the build. perthwrx.com pizza night coming soon! First thing to do was pour a ground slab. 75mm thick, N20 concrete and 1.5m x 1.5m (this is a big oven) Next was to source some vintage solid clay bricks to build the bench out of. These turned out to be a wedding gift from a friend. the base took about 300 bricks. then lay some bricks.. I did get some help here from Scary I used a 65x6mm stainless steel equal angle as a lintel over the wood store, far over-sized but again a gift. Brickwork complete, note the piers are 1 course lower than the external brickwork. this was to allow the top course of brickwork to act as the form work to the concrete. For the slab I have used a 12mm CFC board as the 'lost form and 50mm x 50mm x3mm mesh reo, again N20 concrete. Image shows the concrete placed and floated. Next is to lay out the refractory bricks and cooking surface of the base of the pizza oven next stage - the dome i did use a kit for this as i felt it was smarter to. the dome was around 280kg so it require a bit of help from some antilag mates! Burke was not available...... the bricks were quite dirty so i acid washed the them. I used hydrochloric acid, no i didnt water it down. worked fine. the dome is covered with an aluminium based reflector (sarking) over which a 1200°C rated ceramic fibre insulation blanket, chicken wire is used to hold it all in place and give the render something to grip to. First coat of render second coat and then I have to let it cure for a few days before slowing building up oven temps. Oven compete minus the flue , which is a drop in item and clean up. pretty damn impressed. pwrx pizza night $20 a head?
