I got the permit to move the unregistered vehicle to be safe it was only like 20 or 30 bux. If you are shipping the car back and will be there in person id hand the plates back while over there, i returned them to the DPI in WA but getting the rego refunded was a major PITA to do from WA! Faggots at the NSW DPI callcenter didn't want to know me and put me in the too hard basket. |

your hearsay ain't be true. mate moved over from Vic and had to take his car to the pits to be inspected before being rego'ed locally here.

I went through most of the options when I bought from Vic. The stamp duty for memory is near enough to the same in all states except QLD. I think they are a touch cheaper.
With my vic purchase I filled out a vic roads transfer of ownership and submitted it and cancelled the rego. The refund for unused rego came to me. Small win. But then it was as others have discussed. Ship over. Pay for permit and for inspection all over the phone then run it over the pits. Could be problematic for a highly modded car. Too much ballache trying to reg in another state unless you have someone local to give you an address. Upside of out of state reg is you are above the law on stickers. But too many run ins and you may fall foul of the time limitation on changing the reg. I ran around in vic in my old RA for 2 years running amok with WA reg and license and had no issues. Pulled several times and they were gagging to defect the car but couldnt touch it.

There is some exemption. I cant remember if it is based on the age of the car of the time of ownership, but there are some exemptions for pit inspections for out of state cars.

To the best of my knowledge the moment you drive an interstate registered vehicle OWNED by a WA driver your car is unregistered the moment you hit the border. permit required to drive.
It's a kickback from the govt introducing laws to stop people buying new vehicles over east to avoid WA stamp duty. It's simply pathetic as I believe we are the only state with this issue. To the best of my knowledge all states require you transfer your drivers license after 3 continuous months of primary living address. It's fine to drive in WA if you have a license from the same state as registered purchased car. So if you moved here with an interstate car - transfer license and rego at the same time.

Thats what I was told. I have bought two cars, one from Queensland and NT . One with Ceva, they were the cheapest and the car not being 100% I was happy with the services. The next time I was more concerned with the car I went through VIP(a lot pricier) and they promise the world, The car would be placed on the train in a container, secure and no red dust. In their words! the contracted truck driver would not fit in it and would not move it. So it was on a semi, placed at the front were there was canvas traps were supposed to give more protection. When I arrived to pick it up, the car was the very last one, coved in shit and they drove it to the wash bay where they intended to hose it down wash it with a sponge straight off the ground!!!!! If I did it again, I would use a owner/driver. Both time I ask the owners to leave the plates on so I could drive it around until it was ready for the pits, But as the cars were not transferred into my name, the third party insurances is still in the previous owner and the state the car came from, so if you are involved in a car accident your fucked. Also carry some tools and the excuse that your off to a mechanics.

fly over east,
look at cars, buy the nicest, put rego in your name, drive it home, watch out for roo's when maxing out across nullabor, three months to transfer it to wa rego and take over pits, or just sent your mail to an address in the state of origin. ....its not like you see many trucks in wa with qld rego *cough* *cough*

Unless you live on the east coast for 1+years with the car, you have to put it over the pits here. Any 'savings' on stamp etc will require you to have an address in that state. Then you will need to look into the insurance costs and how it will work with a vehicle licensed over east but housed in WA yada yada. Then you will eventually have to put it in a WA name and pay the duty at that point. They will catch up with you as all forms of Government are just cash collectors these days.
