Running - Treadmill - Knee Issues

I am sure these forums have plenty of runners so I will ask my question here.

I have started running again on a treadmill. Yes I am carrying at least 20kg too much weight. I bought myself a pair or Asics Nimbus Gel 13's. I have had these in the past and found them better than Kayano's as they don't have as stiff of a sole.

I am following the C25K guide as I would probably have a heart attack trying to go whole hog running for 40 minutes.

I found the run easy as, just doing 60 second walk 90 second jog at only 8km/h today. I ran at 5am today, by 12pm my right knee on the inside fucking kills, like a stabbing feeling, no clicking grinding or anything like that.

I am not giving up and will just suck down glucosamine and rub on shitloads of tiger balm but can anybody give any tips on relieving the issues caused by treadmill running (cbf running in the 1-5degree cold).

Cheers

I have the same problem, I'm 6 foot 4 and 120 kgs, I ran for 3 weeks and then my knees started to hurt as your discribing. I have spoken to a pt friend of mine and he has that because I weigh so much it loads up my knees and I should cycle or swim untill I drop 10-15kgs to keep my knees in one piece ha ha

Ditch the threadmill

Stationary bike riding, maximum resistance
Or a rowing machine
No impact to the knee joints

Had to go on the bike and rowing machine when I had my knee recon to get fitness at start and get knee strong again

Stick to the cross trainer till you drop some weight. Fundamentally sums up the issue.

Instead of running put it on an incline and up the pace a bit for 90 secs, you'll find it as hard as the run without the impact.

Then work on getting into the running.

6ft 4 and 120kgs isn't anything new, most Ruckmen in the AFL would be those stats and they'll cover ~15kms a game, difference is they are used to it.

You can't expect to go from zero to hero in a matter of weeks without your body saying fuck you in some way, consider it payback for treating it like shit for a few years.

Going too hard too early is the biggest reason why most people bin the exercise, build up to it and your body will cope.

Sure have been - down 32kg in 2012... most of that in the last 3 or so months.

Would play a game of basketball (or at least waddle up and down a court) monday and tues. Wed and thurs was agony, knees so sore, could barely walk. Now I am playing both games hard, sometimes going to the gym before or after and not even feeling it afterwards. I stuck mostly to the bike/cross trainer to begin with. - I could walk for 60 min easily on the treadmill, but at the pace I had to go at to avoid pain it wasnt doing much. Bike would burn 2 x the energy, crosstrainer 2.5 times. Fitter and stronger than I have been ... almost ever.

Just the weight to go. 20kg or so.

thought so, giving you a slap on the arm walking past at the Plex

Thanks all, I will start mixing up the workout with my bike and cross trainer. Also will do what XT has said.

Cheers

I snapped my left knee cap in 2 a year and a half ago since then running causes the kind of pain you mentioned in your post. My musculoskeletal issues and fitness are managed by Perth Integrated Health, where I train once a week and also receive soft tissue massage once a fortnight. They currently have Deep Water Running programs going twice a week and my trainer recommended I try it as the water keeps the strain on your joints down. Might be worth you checking out and yep cross trainers, rower or the bike are all much kinder on the knees then a treadmill.
