Default ISP's and what service you have...

Hey guys,

Currently with M2 Commander which have honestly been great, very little downtime if ever. I have decided to disconnect the number from the home as paying for line rental for a phone that physically hasn't been plugged in for years seemed silly.

Does anyone have just an adsl connection without a landline number connected to it? I know iinet do a service for $70/month with unlimited downloads called "naked dsl".

Any input would be great before I go about picking an ISP.

Cheers,

Shaun

I honestly wouldn't touch any naked adsl service, even if you paid me to do so.
There are a few benefits to having a PSTN service (phone), namely having a whetting supply on the line and having a dial tone (stops technicians from pinching a phone line if a fault in the area has been raised and they need to swap pairs to resolve it and also allows for quick verification if a line fault exists i.e. static on the line).

iiNet has greatly gone down the gurgler since TPG took over, they have been greatly reducing their peering points globally which has been causing a lot of issues recently, not the mention how bad their support has become =/

I had some colleagues at work who had endless issues with sync speeds (due to a line fault, was epic amounts of static on the line) and TPG were dragging their feet for the better part of 6 months, closing multiple tickets as soon as they were raised. Colleagues decided to dump TPG and went to Telstra who were able to find the fault and resolve it within a couple of weeks resulting in no line fault and a sync speed that was 4 times higher.

I'm not saying that you should go to Telsta, but to be wary about TPG and the ISP's that it owns...

Edit: Funnily enough I've been with iiNet for a number of years in two locations and never any major issues (except for funny routing to Asia and the occasion disruption to SEA-ME-WE 3).

Currently on ADSL2+ with phone and Unlimited for $79.95 per month.
Plan was originally 250Gb which was then upgraded to 300Gb, then 1000Gb and now Unlimited.

Will be looking at going elsewhere (possibly ABB or Skymesh) once the NBN is available in and area.

I've been with Amnet for about 8 years and they've been brilliant, got 2 ASL2+ connections at home with them and a connection at work with them.

Been using Belong (subsidiary of Telstra) ADSL for 2 years now and never had any issues with them, no lock-in contract or activation fees as far as i'm aware
