Its only the sale of new cars. I think Germany is doing the same but in something stupid like 2020.

Looking at the way we as a society currently chew through cars. By 2050, 90% will be without engine because of that. We are a throw away society, when a car gets 10-15yrs old its considered an old obsoleted POS. Look at something like a VT commo. They were as common as mud when released. Now you dont even really see them that much. And they are only 17 odd years old now.

Maybe if people were serious about emmissions, they would look at how much energy and such goes into pumping out throw away consumer goods for example. Most people wont renew a car every year, but they will sure as hell make sure they have the next i-galaxy every year.

If you research how much energy (and pollution etc) is required to find, mine, transport, refine, produce, transport, export and install the battery tech being used you'd be gobsmacked to think that at our current technology it is the way forward from a Greens perspective. Keep investing and get it right and yea sure, but right now, it's a false Green economy.

Wheres the electricity coming from to charge electric cars? Power stations. Whats fuelling the power stations?

I read once "with electric cars, all you're doing is moving the exhaust pipe further away from the car"

For the most part, electricity is still generated by burning gas (and coal). But the industrial gas turbines at power stations are so much more efficient than even the best engines in vehicles today.

The other factor is power stations are generally not directly in the center of cities, where heavy pollution from vehicles is actually a health issue, not just an enviromental one. So shifting it out to the edges of cities or wherever the stations are, is better in that regard.

And with power generation, there is already alot of ground swell with moving to renewables. By 2040, renewable power will probably make up a larger portion of our power generation.

You say about the throw away society. Just before the UK held the Olympics. The government gave 2,000 GBP for you to 'scrap' your car and buy a new one. So people were selling really old cars and buying little i10's and i20's as they were cheap.

The UK did this so when the world came to London, all the cars were new so they looked better.

The downside, the dealers selling the cars, on sold 'service packs', so small workshops lost the servicing of the cars and the dealers workshops also struggled as they were servicing cars for free for x amount of years because the services were paid up front.

There will always be petrol and diesel cars out there. But as we have seen already, the advancement of the electric car in the last few years, how cool are they going to be in 20 years from now!

That said, cant beat a petrol car!

It most likely will, but there will still be a substantial amount of traditional power generation required to maintain the baseload.
It will be interesting to see how power storage technologies develop between now and 2040.

Bring on hydrogen powered combustion engines. Best of both worlds.
