New Demerit Laws - Double or nothing!
WA motorists with 12 demerit points can soon keep driving on a good behaviour bond after double-ornothing laws passed through Parliament yesterday.
The laws exclude P-platers, but suspended drivers can keep their licences if they don’t gain more than a one-point penalty over 12 months. Motorists losing more than one demerit point on top of the 12 points will have their original three-month penalty doubled but will get a clean slate if they do not offend in the next 12 months. The laws abolish extraordinary licences for demerit point offences. Assistant Planning and Infrastructure Minister Tony McRae said 70 per cent of drivers who accepted the second-chance offer in the Eastern States had changed their behaviour to become better drivers. He said motorists who committed another offence forfeited the privilege to use the roads. But shadow road safety minister John McGrath and Murray MLA Murray Cowper — a former policeman — attacked the new laws, saying the Government was sending the wrong message on road safety.
