ECU replacment????

Hey guys. The missus has a 99 gc8 wrx which apparently has an OLD Link ecu. It seems to be doing strange things and im wondering whats out there to replace it??

I considered going back to stock but its currently not running an afm and i dont know if the wires in the engine bay for one are still there.. its also running an Sti turbo and fmic which kinda suggests it requires a custom tune to suit. Or maybe not. I dont know.
any info/help would be awesome!!! Cheers.
Chris

Sorry id this is in the wrong place.

Swapping the ecu out for another will require at minimum tuning to get it right. So expect quite a few $ for the swap.

Most people with a GC8 run a PowerFC but that will need an AFM. Or you can get a Vipec or Motec to suit.

Could upgrade to a new Link G4. Much better then the old PossumLink's.
But, installation and tuning will be upwards of $3000 I would say.
Or buy a new Air flow meter and fit a factory ECU, much cheaper. Then get it run on a dyno to see if its running safe.
I'm pretty sure the wiring would still be there.

The new link is way out of the price range! And im not sure where id find a stock 99 gc8 ecu.. For an auto too. hoping the afm wiring is still there. Agreed it would b the cheapest option.

Id personally go the power fc djetro, if theyre available... But the cheapest option is going to most appealing to her at the moment.

As far as I am aware, there is no such thing as a djetro for Subaru.

So you will need an AFM. Check that out and search forums for a 2nd hand powerfc unit.

Have you considered just getting the PossumLink retuned? I've had two WRX's with old Links, and they've both been fine to drive daily when tuned properly.
It could be a mechanical fault causing your problems.
WHat exactly is your car doing, or not doing?

tactix. 10-10-2012 12:35 PM

The car is running extremely poorly under heavy load... The auto transmission isnt dropping gears properly. And its difficult to start.. Sometimes stalling after starting.
i had the ecu retuned by sean at allstar about a year ago when she bought it but it was still never running right.
Weve had to have the harmonic balancer replaced due to alot of play.
At first i thought a fuel problem, then spark plugs, then i noticed the rocket cover gaskets were leaking so i thought it might be filling the leads/plugs with oil.
Im now thinkn that the ecu is just screwed..

You should contact Leigh Hynes, he is the W.A. distributer for Link ECU.
He's based in Busselton now, someone else may be able to chime in with contact details.
He should be able to have a look and let yo know if its a faulty ECU (unlikely) or a tune issue. or maybe something else.

Google Leigh via Busselton Subaru (subbie if he's updated his details) Services.

Beware he's preparing this week for Saturdays Rally WA

I still have his email as subaru, due to some issues this may have changed, but the above link should get to him.

okay so the car is at the tuners and they think the ecu is to blame. im thiking of putting the car back to the stock ecu and stock afm with snorkel pipe..
where abouts can i find these parts for a 1999 gc8 wrx??. wolud anyone happen to have them second hand??
the hard part is that im after an automatic stock ecu, if youve got a manual one let me know though because i dont like my chances of finding an auto one..

Cheers!!
