What to buy - Advice needed

Want to buy a good camera and not sure what to get (I know nothing about cameras or photography). Want to spend around 2-2.5k.

Any advice appreciate, Cheers.

Is it a digital camera or movie one.

For that money you can more than likley get yourself into a DSLR Canon or Nikon is the way to go imo..

You will hear lots of arguments for and against each..

I suggest you look at sites like www.dpreview.com www.fredmiranda.com and other photog forums and form your own opinion. Then go into shops and try out the gear you like..

Call Stu at Quality Cameras, he will tell you what you will need. He is a no bullshit and 100% honest guy.

My advice though would be maybe a Canon 400D with the standard lens and maybe a telephoto for motorsports etc..

Yeah the Canon would be the way to go, great quality and pics.

I agree Canon 400d or Nikon D80

If you're taking it away, a DSLR can be a right pain in the ass.

Search websites like www.dpreview.com or http://asia.cnet.com

I would recommend something like a Canon Powershot G7 or Lumix DMC-TZ3. Something that's compact enough to take with you without the bulk of a DSLR but also has lots of manual control and will also take great photos in full auto mode.

judging by your comments in TJ's thread, you want it for general travel happy-snaps, correct? it comes down to your priorities.

i'm a Canon boy so i'd suggest something like a 400D body for ~$1100 and a 17-40mm f/4L USM for another ~$1100 as an awesome walk-around travel-photo package.
throw in a $150 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 prime for a bit of fun portraiture with heaps of bokeh.

again, all depends what you want out of it...

Jaron, I don't know if you really wanna lug a camera bag around with you, then when u decide something is worth photographing, you have to put ur bag down, get ur camera out, put the lens on, and by the time you have done all that, what you were going to take a photo of has flown away, or moved.

If its for travel purpose's maybe a high end point and shoot will be sufficient. That way its small enough to carry on you at all times and quick to "whip out"

I don't know about which one to get, but im sure the guy at QCS does :p or someone else on here...

I dont believe a DSLR is a pain Travelling I took all my gear to Africa and it wasnt that much of a pain if you just take the camera with lens on to walk around with.
