Yeh.. for a start up user, Lumix is more than enuf. After you understand with all the principal of ISO, Av, Tv, Ev+/-, Bracketing, etc, then it's time to upgrade to a bit serious one, like Canon SLR 40D or Nikon D300.

Start with a Canon 400D. You can collect lenses as you need them (L series/higher end lenses) and then upgrade to a better Canon body later down the track. No point buying a lumix with a heap of lenses that has to be sold as one whole package when you decide to upgrade to a Canon/Nikon.

This also applies to Nikon slr's (instead of Canon).

errrr... Thought the LUMIX DMC-FZ18 is a point-and-shoot camera. The lens is fixed and cannot be changed.

I think Canon 400D is discontinued and being replaced with 450D. 450D with kit lens wouldn't fit on his budget ($800 ish).

But still, he can get 400D on Ebay if he's not afraid of warranty issue.

Mate, you'd be better saving/putting the extra $300 to it and get a Canon D-SLR. Don't waste your time with Panosonic crap.

That camera is very very good for a beginner.
