what kind of things do you want to shoot? what are you needing from the camera?

STI325V6 20-07-2008 11:53 AM

Thinking of doing a camera course, want to take shots of Nature (Bush Walking), action shots (Sport) and of course Subarus and other cars.

cheers

Yeh.. for a start up user, Lumix is more than enuf. After you understand with all the principal of ISO, Av, Tv, Ev+/-, Bracketing, etc, then it's time to upgrade to a bit serious one, like Canon SLR 40D or Nikon D300.

vyper 20-07-2008 12:20 PM

Start with a Canon 400D. You can collect lenses as you need them (L series/higher end lenses) and then upgrade to a better Canon body later down the track. No point buying a lumix with a heap of lenses that has to be sold as one whole package when you decide to upgrade to a Canon/Nikon.

This also applies to Nikon slr's (instead of Canon).

GREXS 20-07-2008 12:37 PM

errrr... Thought the LUMIX DMC-FZ18 is a point-and-shoot camera. The lens is fixed and cannot be changed.

I think Canon 400D is discontinued and being replaced with 450D. 450D with kit lens wouldn't fit on his budget ($800 ish).

But still, he can get 400D on Ebay if he's not afraid of warranty issue.

350d aint bad? they have continuous shooting and the digital rebel are verry cheap but still have alll the good features.

werticusness 20-07-2008 01:38 PM

yeah sounds like your actually interested in a proper DSLR id go for a 300d, 350d, 400d, 450d with lens kit. whichever you find fits your budget will be fine but each model up added two years of technology and a lot of features

Mate, you'd be better saving/putting the extra $300 to it and get a Canon D-SLR. Don't waste your time with Panosonic crap.

That camera is very very good for a beginner.

TopGear 20-07-2008 07:13 PM

yeah man stretch your budget a bit the canon dslr will be alot better then the panasonic point and shoot.

perthzed 21-07-2008 12:28 PM

Well one thing u'll need for a sports shots is a quick shutter speed. A lot of the cheaper cameras don't have this.

jzr 21-07-2008 01:17 PM

i agree with most people on here maybee save that little extra and get a canon 400d they are a great entry level camera.

NVRENUF 21-07-2008 07:48 PM

mate start with a canon 400D you can always change and upgrade lens later but for start kit everything u need mate.

STI325V6 21-07-2008 07:49 PM

Okay, I will spend the extra and go the Canon 400D, can anyone recommend a good place to get one, or should I stick to eBay.

Can get the camera and 2 lenses for about $1000.00 on ebay, 18-55mm lens and 75-300mm lens.

cheers

vyper 21-07-2008 07:53 PM

Ebay is cheapest. 75 - 300 is a shit lens, so avoid it if you're planning to upgrade. But if you only want it to learn with, it'll be fine.

Shop around, take a look at digitalrev - They are usually the fastest, cheapest and most reliable.

Thanks for the help all, I have gone for the Canon eos 450D with a 18-55mm lens, got it off eBay, Digitalrev as recommended by vyper (cheers mate)...

$919.00 including spare battery, 8gb card and some other crap thrown in..

cheers

GREXS 21-07-2008 09:00 PM

Good choice. I like 450D features, ie. Live View FTW! After playing for couple months, start to get L Lens (ie, 24-70mm f/2.8L, 70-200mm f/2.8, 16-35mm f/2.8L). :D

Very nice mate, I say to anyone thinking bout getting a camera and doing photography as a casual pastime, don't buy anything shit, because you'll regret it. 350D > onwards from Canon :)
