Looking at picking up a DSLR for the ~$1k mark to use on my overseas trip

Checking out Duty Free and have these 3 options

Canon EOS1000D w/twin lens kit $1049
1000D

Nikon D60 w/twin lens kit $999

Thanx in advance fellas!

D60 Kit with VR kit lenses (around $1100) FTW!

Nice camera great build quality, easy to use but with full manual control when required.

VR lenses sharpen handheld shots very well, even at night.

Handheld:

nice nice - that d60 package they have there for 999 includes the VR lenses

Hows the speed on it - ease of hooking it up to pc etc?

don't hook the camera up to a pc, get a USB card reader. sooooooooooo much quicker

Adz 16-12-2008 10:08 PM

Yeah thats easy enough..

More importantly - camera options/opinions/advice?

No idea what i'm looking for here - been out of loop for a while

i personally bought a canon because my mates had them so i could steal their lenses.
i originaly bought a twin lens kit and never used the zoom lens, it was just crap. better off spending a bit more, getting just a body and then a decent lens. or a point and shoot.

or read ballsacs thread

D60 VR zoom lens (55-200) handheld @ maximum zoom:

Kit zoom lens is fine for general shooting.

Short kit lens (18-55) macro :

Speed: Auto focus is very quick and refocusing on a moving object is instantaneous. 1.5 second from switch on to ready to shoot is damn fast.

Auto de-dust is reliable (my sensor is still speck free after 9000 frames shot mainly outdoors with lens changes on the fly)

Camera uses SD cards so camera to pc speed is quick, but as jester said a card reader will always be faster.

the D60 also supports SDHC too. I have a 8 gig card in there, and on the max resolution i can take over 1000 photos. I hook it up to a pc (cause my laptop sd card slot isnt SDHC :/) and it doesnt take long to download them at all.

Ive read that some people think the canons are easier to use, but im a dslr camera newbie and i dont find it hard at all. All the options are pretty much available within one push of a button.

1000D, but see if you can get the 17-85 lens with it. Fantastic lens, massive step up from the 18-55 kit lens.

Also, JB Hifi have 4gb SDHC cards for $20
