Default Converting MTS files

My Sony hard drive camcorder produces video in MTS format. How can I convert these so they can be viewed with windows media player etc? There's loads of software out there, but I need something FREE! cheers.

Try Handbrake

http://handbrake.fr/

not 100% sure if it will open the mts files but if it does it will convert it to anything you like.
