have a look on your remote for any sound effect / surround effect buttons,
you may need to change "downmix" settings inside the player menu for this to work,
all the moden ones have this, the old ones are hit and miss,

I work for a retail company that sells tv/audio in cannington so if you wanna have a look at whats new out there send me a PM

EDIT: just spotted something, on the dvd player, just under the yellow video lead, is that an orange coax digital conector, if so you may be able to get a optical to coax converter.
EDIT2: this may not be the exact one to suit your needs, but just as an example

Reaper - I've found that the optical to coaxial convertots introduce enough audio lag to be noticeable when watching a DVD.

The recents ones may be better, but optical sends already are transduced once - converting back creates another point of lag.

This is true but the new ones are much better than the old ones, lag is not as bad any more (but still present)
But in this case it looks like the ONLY option to go from TV to DVD without buying a whole new sound system with optical input.

Note this is only for TV sound out of the speaker setup (abc,7,9,10, etc)

1. It does have downmix settings... what should this be set to? The options are 2ch stereo, a couple of mono settings and 5.1, but no sound comes out on 5.1 at this time . Why can't these things be more simple?
2. Yes it is. Don't mind the lag if its not too extreme... there is a setting I saw on the menu for lag adjustment, to have audio from all speakers happening in real time according to distance from the ears.

Thanks to all for info so far...

I don't care too much about the lack of 5.1 except for DVDs that comply, it's all good - I realise this system aint exactly high end... but is there any way I can at least have 2.1 with the extra stereo signal hitting the rear speakers for normal TV without having to change heaps of settings? (Don't matter about the centre). The manual which came with the HT isn't too clear on this.

On the point of cables or whatever, is there anything I still need to get?

Cheers.
G'day mate,

If your not fazed about centre speaker performance I have a JVC RX-7032 digital audio reciever that you can take possesion of for the grand total price of FUCKALL$$$$$ and 0-cents. The only catch is the centre speaker cuts out occasionally. Comes with remote and instruction manual, been sitting in the linen cupboard for two years taking up space...
