True, I think he did a pretty good job considering he had no tripod!

It was a "oh wow, the waves are crashing the way I wanted them to... shit I don't have my tripod or ND filter with me" situation. I have been back 2 days in a row and the waves yesterday were going across the breakwater and today they were still! Its the old term... do with what you have at the time!

Yep, that's the next point IF he wanted that blurring of the waves. If so... you can argue 1/8 is not much blurring at all... and bordering on useless. Either shoot the correct shutter speed with handheld or use a tripod with a longer exposure than 1/8.
He seems to be caught in limbo inbetween. |

So let's see, dial down aperture consciously so you can shoot at 1/8 to get blurring in the waves, yet the photo is blurry because of hand shake... hrmm. If you had thought that much before the shot, then surely you would have thought of what I had suggested previously. I only commented to let you know the best shot you can get in those conditions with the gear you had. |

Yeah I didnt want to shoot at F/22 but at F/11 it wasnt slow enough to capture the misty waves crashing over the breakwater.
The waves were coming in pretty fast and I had to burst shoot to even get the best shot off. You should have seen some of the other ones I tried to do. That was the best shot of the sequence. From now on I always have my tripod in my car and all my filters in my bag. Happy to hear everyone's thoughts on my pics... its the only way I learn! Plus I thought it wasnt too bad for someone who purchased their first DSLR camera 3 months ago and hasnt had any experience photography let alone in shots like that before!

I live pretty far from the beach and most of my photos are taken at lunch time in a 5km reach of my work place in Murdoch.
When I get a chance Im gonna hit up the beach areas and see what I can do there.

Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. Poor effort at desaturating and having some issues with my Leica at the moment (Mainly me being a slack ass and not taking it off the High Sensitivity Mode... d'oh!) |

Before someone asks - it's just a crop, not a stitch.
