Where to start

Ok kids,

I used to have a play with the RC stuff just as the electronic speed controllers came in. I bought a mac daddy one (in its day) and it was something stupid like $450. This was in the mid 1990's.

Anyways a couple of years ago I bought a TT01 and a few hop up parts like LSD etc. I have assembled it and never used it.

It came with a (I imagine) cheap and shitty ESC. I dont know whether this will run the lipo batteries?

So what I want to know is what do I need to get this thing going. I have dont a bit of research online and the lipo batteries seem to be the way forward.

Also I see that the FM transmitter / receivers have come down heaps in price. Are they that much better than the AM ones?

99.999% of the time this will sit on a shelf with the rest of my RC stuff. Would be nice to know though that if I want to grab it and scare the shit out of the dog I can.

So I need the following:
Batteries
ESC
Motor
Transmitter / Receiver
Lipo charger?
Ok kids,

It came with a (I imagine) cheap and shitty ESC. I dont know whether this will run the lipo batteries? Its not as shitty as you think. It will run Lipo, but only the 7.4volt (2s) LiPo. Check that your ESC has an undervolt cut-out and that it is enabled, otherwise you could blow up your battery pack (and chassis) if it gets too low and buggers up.

So what I want to know is what do I need to get this thing going. I have dont a bit of research online and the lipo batteries seem to be the way forward. Miles better than NiMh

Also I see that the FM transmitter / receivers have come down heaps in price. Are they that much better than the AM ones? Only ones worth upgrading to are 2.4ghz systems that dont require special frequency crystals anymore. They just find an unused frequency and 'lock in'.

99.999% of the time this will sit on a shelf with the rest of my RC stuff. Would be nice to know though that if I want to grab it and scare the shit out of the dog I can.

So I need the following:
Batteries Turnigy LiPo 7.4V 2S (40C or Higher)
ESC
Motor
Transmitter / Receiver
Lipo charger? Yep

This is what you want!

$99 aud

HobbyKing R/C Hobby Store : Brushless Car Power System 4000Kv/100A

Lipo's:

HobbyKing R/C Hobby Store : ZIPPY Flightmax 4000mAh 2S1P 20C hardcase pack

$16.90 per pack

4000 @ 20c = 80 amps, you don't need 40c (160 amp) packs at all as you'll never even get close to drawing that amount of current.

you'll need a charger too.......

$25.00 aud

HobbyKing R/C Hobby Store : IMAX B6 Charger/Discharger 1-6 Cells (GENUINE)

Plus about $30 freight.

Oh...And a 2.4 ghz radio:

$31.30

Ah - Well at least my battery will be good for some future upgrades @ 40C , I got the Turnigy 5000Mah 2S 40C @ about $25 each, 2 of them. And one of the more powerful chargers that do LiPo and NiMh it was 400W I think.

Rossco 11-01-2012 10:17 PM

Yeah you could have had 3 20c packs for the price of the 2 40c's.

I used 40c 5000 4s @ 200 amps making 3200 watts (yeah....3.2 Kw!!) in my 2.5 metre hotliner (extremely fast composite glider).... gotta love brushless/lipo power systems!

Sounds like you need pretty much the same kit as me Brendo... Hoping my gear will roll up this week so will let ya know how it goes! :)

Kato 18-01-2012 03:45 PM

Guys where do you start from scratch? I have nothing at all, but keen to terrorise the Garden City carparks on the weekends...

i.e. Shell, running gear, wheels etc?

Then just ad the bits rossco posted above? Any parts that people buy first up that they later regret and wish they had spent more on to get the proper bits?

Jimmy S 18-01-2012 04:03 PM

Tamiya TT01 kit John!!... Seems to be the way to go for a reasonably priced entry level kit!

Kato 23-01-2012 02:37 PM

So Tamiya TT01? Where to buy?

Master D 23-01-2012 03:07 PM

stanbridges or any of the hobby shops.

about $350 to $400 for a pre built working car.
