The old schedule (pre 2006) had a service called interval 4. That was all fluids, spark plugs and cambelt. Well under $2k even worst case. The single cam engines are cheaper, turbo autos are dearer...

What I do for my customers in this situation is to remove the passenger side timing belt cover. It's relatively easy. then wind the engine over by hand using a socket on the crank pulley and inspect...
