Default Unwanted/private number calls

Hey guys,

Just wanted some info on what my options would in the case of the above. It has only started recently, and I'm not exactly sure who is doing it etc, but someone has been calling me off a private number at annoying times of day, only to hang up or just not say anything. Its kinda happened on somewhat random days too, so no clue.
No background noise or speaking or anything...
The first few times it happened I just answered the phone and they hung up... so I just started pressing the receive call button, putting the phone down and walking away...
But a couple of days later they try again and I'm starting to get annoyed.

Is there any way I can get this number tracked or somehow block it?
I don't really want to resort to getting my number changed just because some fucktard has nothing better to do with their time.
If it helps, I have an N97 on a 3 network plan.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeremy

I have called the service provider, and their only courses of action were to either;

change my number

or

note down the dates, times and frequency of the calls and report it to the police (as they can follow up under harassment etc)

But I thought someone on here may have been in a similar situation before and can offer some advice

Because they're ringing your mobile it means that your number will be listed
at those specific times on their bill. That makes it very easy for the service
providers to trace.

So you can either note down time etc and report to police (my preferred option
as I have the patience to do this and press charges)

-OR-

When they ring again dont ask questions simply tell them that you're having it
traced because your number will be on their bill and if they stop NOW then you
will not investigate further or press charges.

Some mobiles can reject Private Number calls Automatically, its a setting in the phone. See if you have.

they could be calling from a payphone which will call but instantly disconnect when someone answers if you haven't put any coins in.

Probably an overseas call centre fishing for active phone numbers that will then be sold on to another call centre.

Police won't do didly squat either.

We had telemarketers calling and playing high pitched squeels down the phone. Police were not interested at all. Telephone company was not interested at all either.

Whoever it is usually gives up after a while though... So just grin and bear it IMO.

Ive actually been through this whole process myself mate, in the end, if it bothers you that much all you can do is change your number. Either that, just put up with it until the person gets bored.

I had this going on about a year ago, I actually has a suspicion on who culpruit was. I contacted Telstra and they said that they can't do anything about it, and they suggested calling the police as by law, they cannot provide any information to me on the caller.

After speaking to the police, they said to log all the calls etc. but in reality, there is very little to be done unless the person has threatened in any way. If all they have done is ring and hang up it would be very difficult for them to get approval for a court order for Telstra to hand over the required information.

Honestly mate, if they arent threatening you or anything, best option is put up with it, sucks I know, but the person will get bored eventually.

If the number turns out to be listed on my bill, I hope I can recognise it and sort it out with the person myself.

If its just listed on the bill as private number, then I will take the information to the police, as they can get the phone number and details of this person from the phone provider (I can't because of privacy etc). I guess they'll either send them a warning or something, or even (in some cases like I have now read about) they may give me the last 6 digits of the mobile number.

But yes, hopefully they will get bored of it eventually...

The number wouldn't be listed on your bill. It would just say private.

I'd say easiest solution would be to just block calls from all private numbers. If your phone doesn't have the feature, Three can probably enable it on your account somehow.
Just slightly inconvenient that you won't receive any actual legitimate calls from private numbers (such as your bank, etc) but if this is really annoying you then that's a small price to pay.
