Secondary Air Pump $WTF

Im in the same boat as this dude:
http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/showthread.php?t=36626&highlight=secondary+air+pump

MY06WRX Wagon here..
Got a CEL with Flashing CC the other week.. Got Subaru to check the codes and they said the Sec. Air pump valve was stuck ? and it was gonna cost me just $2500 to get it replaced. W..TF?

Surfn the interweb's apparently I can get this code error deleted and it's only related to cold-starts and emissions checks?

Warranty is gone, and I'm looking at modding in the next 3-4 weeks.
Question is, do I need this and get a tuner to delete the CEL code?

Rather spend those bucks on some mods.

(srry if wrong place to post)

Still some uncertaintity..

After reading the threads over at NASOIC, my understanding now is I can get rid of these air pumps and use block off plates on the cylinder heads.
They only warm up the cat on a cold start then shut the valves after >90secs.

Found that Cosworth also sell these. Not sure if similar product is avail in Aus?

From what I can tell; the 06 WRX has 2 pumps(drivers side and pass side). Not sure which one is bust but can remove both of them, the valves and related hoses and use block off plates on the cylinder heads; then all CEL codes deleted with a tune.

Guess it would be convenient to get that TBE fitted and car tuned and have this done at the same time.

Has anyone done this before; or know if the tuners in Perth have done this?

I'm getting a rumble at idle and louder rumble approx for 90secs when I cold start, which might be exhaust feedback? Not sure if this means the valve is stuck open which would cause damage with the daily driving at present.?

Spend the $2500 on an exhaust and tune from Allstar Garage.
The car will be a lot more for fun to drive and oh, they'll get rid of that check engine light :)

You're right in saying that it only affects cold starts so it shouldn't cause any other issues but I'd check with a workshop first. I'd also ask for a quote to fix the secondary air pump from someone other than Subaru as $2,500 seems ridiculous.

$2500 is ridiculous! The pump is located next to the fuse box and doesn't look much different to any 12V pump you would use to blow up an air bed. All it does is open two valves and blow air into the exhaust ports for about 30 seconds when the car is cold for emissions, then turns off and close the valves to stop exhaust coming back into the pump.

You may be able to install the block off plates on the heads, while leaving one of the air pump valves plugged in and disabling the applicable CELs. Just from reading around, people have mentioned that one of the valves has a 5 wire connector (other has 2), this valve contains an atmospheric pressure sensor and if this is unplugged the ECU will go into limp mode. They suggest this is because the ECU checks atmospheric pressure against manifold pressure before the engine starts to make sure there isn't a large difference.

But yeah, if you’re going to be getting a tune and exhaust soon, have a chat with a workshop.

i have removed it from a 08 STI rally car running on ECUTek and plates were made for the heads, had no problems with it

Ridiculous yes!

Will give ASG a call tmorrow, and a few others and see what they say.
Time to start the mods.

Cheers

Let us know how you go mate - it would be good to have some opinions from the quality local workshops on the issue.

Regarding mods, have a look at this thread; page 3 has links to a few other useful threads.

As Dan aka SL33PER said he's done it at work which is MMS, I'd
give them a call or even better go in as they probably can make
you up the plates quickly as they've already got the jig.

Will give him a call tomorrow during break.
Thanks mate.

It's purely for emissions/cold start. In some respects it's like the coolant hoses that run through the throttle body. Just remove and cap it. Throw some pics if you do, would be good to see the outcome.
