Evolution of the WRX

Found a nice and simple little article that talks about the progression of the WRX over the years. Thought some people might appreciate it

Some interesting reading.. Someone should have proof read it a bit better..There was a few errors, especially in the first part.. eg, WRX stands for World Rally Edition ??? What the.. I always thought it was World Rally Experimental.. also vf 34 is a turbo...not an intercooler ;) ..enjoyed it never the less. Didn't know the older versions eg 94,95 etc had TD05 turbos..then went down to TD04s for quicker response in later years.. Thanks. Cheers..

About "WRX", WR obviously stands for "World Rally", and "X" stands for the
mathematical symbol for the unknown, that means its possibility is infinite.

That was the answer given by someone in Subaru marketing.

reconus 09-05-2012 04:02 PM

yeah thats what my understanding of the 'x' was, like in algebra. where x = whatever.

Letchy 09-05-2012 04:48 PM

Yeh it's not completely accurate in some instances but overall I thought it was a very good read. It does give an answer to the good ol question: can you reflash a gc8 stock ecu: Which they say you can't do it to all pre97 models. I found that quite inspiring haha

Strubaru 09-05-2012 04:49 PM

teejay getting your info from american websites given to someone from subaru of america tsk tsk tsk :D

the X stands for cross, everyone knows this, or don't they???

Letchy 09-05-2012 04:55 PM

Maybe they made the 'x' have an open meaning as a clever marketing ploy so that people could attach their own meanings to it, therefore personalising themselves to their products. It's all X files in here

Quoting from part one the article:
The MY00 model saw colour coded side skirts, mirrors and door handles, and revised six spoke 16 inch wheels to differentiate it from the MY99.
Is this correct? Pretty sure colour coded side skirts were not a factory option with the MY00 WRX and Club Spec Evo 4. The Version 6 STI is a different story, but the bog standard MY00 WRX/CSE4 had charcoal side skirts and rear spats.

No. My WRX doesnt have color coded side skirts, yet it is a June 2000 built MY00.

And yes, you can Ecutek flash the GC8 ecu, but no one in perth does it. MRT used to come and visit MMS a couple of times a year to do some. Dont know if they still do or not.

I'm not a full bottle when it comes to tuning, but I know it was popular in the rs lib and pre 97 wrx to tune the stock ecu with a chip. Fats used to have his own and over east the Vos chip was popular.

"WRX Ralleye - late November 1995 saw Subaru Australia release the first in a series of special editions, the first called the Ralleye, cashing in on the success of the WRC team. Only small numbers were available, and featured a Prodrive blue paint job, colour coding of door handles and door mirrors"

They must have run out of the colour coded door handles and mirrors when they built mine then, blue paint doesn't quite fade like black plastic.. and it's spelt 'Rallye.' Just sayin! ;)

Seemed like a bit of an add for MRT & probably written by them too, I've seen something similar on YouTube on the 22B done by Brett Middleton......even says the 4 pots were made by Brembo???

tommo 09-05-2012 08:31 PM

The 99/00 sti has color code as standard I think, and Gomer are you referring to the 22b having brembo's or the wrx? The 22b had brake upgrades over std but I couldn't say what they are..

Pimpreza 09-05-2012 08:33 PM

99% sure the 22B had the same 4 pots as ours but he says they are made by Brembo. I'll have a look for it.

Found them. 1.19sec

the 22b has the same sumitumo branded 4 pots as a standard GC8 but they are painted red

tommo 10-05-2012 02:51 PM

So it seems, I could swear that I remember seeing a 22b at motivation like 5 years ago which had different brakes, they must have been changed I spouse or it was the crack kicking in..

As did MMS back in the 90's...my MY94 WRX had a MMS twin ROM chip installed in about 1995...it was also the first WRX in WA to have four pots installed (later) and an MY99-type rear wing ....

Can you remember exactly what the computers did steve? I have one out of Steve's car and think that it will go in the old boys wagon eventually but it would be nice to know what boost etc it changed.

cheers

nauli 14-05-2012 12:05 PM

^^ I honestly can't remember what the chip enhanced Tom....ask Rob, he would know....I'm not sure what Steve's original ECU had in it.

tommo 14-05-2012 12:17 PM

It has one of the ones you were talking about (90-96 spec), i'll ask rob next time I see him.. cheers
