Ipad App

Kids,

I need an ipad app written for work.

I have floated the idea with a mob overeast who want an extortionate amount and no guarantee that it will work with our accounting system.

So my question is two fold.

1) Does anyone know what I have to do to 'protect' the idea from a legal point of view. i.e. do I have to get whoever I get to make it sign something saying I own all of the intellectual property.

2) Does anyone know anyone that could write the app at a reasonable cost?

Thanks

Brendon

When you employ someone to write said app that in the contract that you own all ip associated to your program you've employed them to produce.
Telstra do this with all their contracted works where IP is involved ( ie program writing/layouts/ etc etc)

I have no idea who does this though.

Depends exactly what you're implying the IP is?

You will find in a lot of cases the code/portions of used to write said app is licensed from other companies.

Keen to see how you progress with this though.

My sister is a solicitor so i have heaped it on her to ask around the office.

I MAY have a lead on someone to write it that is not based in australia so hopefully hey wont try and charge me $150 / hr to write it.

Will be a massive learning experience but it is someing that i have had a hankering to do for a few years so hopefully the cost doesnt scare me off.

I also have telstra coming out to see me about it as ey want to use someone local.

Has anyone ever written an app? How long does it usually take?

Software development can take awhile mate, depending on the end product. I work with several software developers at my organization & they are allocated months for applications let alone ios apps that seem rather simple.

Might want to read into SDLC Process for a better grasp.

A good slide show read also on ios development:

150/hr is cheap for a group of software engineers. To contract one software engineer out as a systems analyst you can expect to pay that just for one.

I think you are being unreasonable if you were quoted $150/hr to have an app developed properly by a reputable business. However they cant do anything if they cant guarantuee it will work.

I charge $50/hr to do web development / programming and that is a big mates-rates and I am seriously undercutting the market. But, I get work that way.

Edit - Project I have just finished at work was 1.1 Million over 3 years. And that was just for a proof of concept. We barely broke even.

Got a spare $100k and a year as that's the sort of ballparks you are looking at for a decent app.

If you want to speed up the process and test if the users will like it download Blueprint Lite from the AppStore and create a proof of concept mockup.

If $100k is too much for you then spend the next 4 years learning how to program and you'll only need $100 bucks to submit it to Apple.

I might have someone who can help. If you get stuck PM me and I will give them a shout.

My opinion, don't make an iOS app, just make a webpage that is iOS / Android friendly. This is what a few of the software developers do at my work with the products they have created and it would be heaps cheaper for the fact that most know how to write webpages and few know how to develop iOS apps.
