Default Unichip discovery

Ok... so this must sound bad... but i bought my car from a young guy who hadnt had the car very long... and i dont think he knew much about it either. i checked over all the normal things, found that the car was pretty much stock apart from an exhaust and yellow top injectors. there was a rocker switch in the centre console, but it didnt seem to change anything when switched, so i never really bothered tracing it.

any who... the other night my car exhibited some rather unusual characteristics for a stock ecu. so i thought, hey why not (finally) check to see if its a stock ecu. turns out i have a unichip piggyback. it appears to be all wired up, and there is an orange wire running away towards the centre dash from it - maybe this goes to switch???

here is a pic...

there is a small secondary unit to the top left (tucked away) ... i'm guessing this is a boost module of the unichip? sounds about right because on cold nights/mornings, my boost spikes up to 5psi higher than normal

what could the orange wire be for? i havent had a chance to trace it yet...

i havent really found much on unichips yet, but has anyone (who has/had one) got any info or personal opinion of them?
i'm also not too sure of their advantage over stock... i've already found SOME info on the differences, but it still doesnt tell me much, just that the unichip is pretty shitty compared to some of the big name aftermarket chips.

personally, from what i've heard so far, best thing for me to do would be to remove the unichip...

fire away with discussion / opinions

i have one, it's not the greatest, but it isnt tooooo bad.
i have lightswitch boost past 4k, compared to verso which i believe gives you some low down power.
if you have the cash, go verso, else just leave it.

is this in your gc8 ? that looks like a 'D15' unichip that is only suited to bugeye onwards??? you should have the skinner looking 'type a' in there, you can't get gc8's verso'd, this is the only reason i went with a unichip

Eww, Uni-shit. Had one, hated it, threw it out a window. Nuff said.

Biggest problem I had was that it often used to go into limp mode with the unishit, so I'd find myself having to pull over and restart the car to get out of limp. If you've got the money, ditch it.

I had a Unichip for a few years.
After fitting and tune there was about 15% more power and torque, boost came on earlier, fuel consumption was a few percent lower, and reduced black staining around the exhaust caused by the usual stock tune which is over rich.
With intake and exhaust mods and another tune there was more performance.
If you have the boost module it prevents overboosting if properly set up.

For a GC8 there may be cheaper ways to get similar performance but if you already have the correct version Unichip then keep it.
