WTB: WRX long engine

The old RS has finally done a big end, I say finally cause it has been just short of a 300,000km innings!!

Looking for reasonable WRX engine to drop in for the time being, pre-98 to be compatible with my manifold etc. Does not have to have all the extra bits n pieces on it as I can 'pick n mix' with alternators, water pumps, belts etc.

If anyone has anything like this or if you know where to point me for a good deal please drop me a PM. Will be needing this soon!!

Many thanks,
Joel.

Thanks guys- yes saw the actual engine 'in the flesh' the other day while putting my car in at RMS... but apparently not compatible with everything on my RS.

Hence why I have stated 'pre-98'. ;)

meh shoehorn it in.. buy new bits :p

would make for a sick conversion

slot in the short block and sell the heads. Youve done in the big end so I assume the your heads are fine. What heads are you currently running?

bad luck joel! thought it was going to tick over to 300!

i think hes using the rs heads (noisey ones)

Mister Two 25-07-2007 04:18 PM

yeah. if your using the RS heads. chuck em. Get some V3/4 STI heads so you can still use the RS manifold and bolt it on. easy 8000rpm. :)

Hey Ludwig, I was under the impression that only v3 heads would bolt up.. as v4 is 98 etc???

If v4 is the go, then I may definately have a deal with someone!!!

PS- Thanks for the condolences guys... but I'm honestly not that upset about it. Fantastic engine to cope with that much punishment for that long! A testament to the Subaru designing and manufacturing such an awesome product.

Mister Two 27-07-2007 07:49 PM

You can use up to V4 and still run the RS manifold. But V3 are supposedly slightly better anyway. More aggressive cams.

Hmmm... interesting.

Sorry to hear Joel... but im not at all surprised! ;)

Best of luck with finding a new motor etc... I thought my MY94 was good lasting to 250kms

Does this apply to early gc8's?
Does this apply to early gc8's?
Yes. Early Gc8 manifolds are pretty much identical to RS manifolds.

Thanks mate. Aaah the good old days eh?!!
Yes. Early Gc8 manifolds are pretty much identical to RS manifolds.
Hence why my original post was for early WRX motors etc!
Still surprised that v4 will fit as I assumed they changed at 98 models?? (Waiting for a few who are in the know to confirm with this one). ;)

Mister Two 28-07-2007 02:17 PM

They did change the manifold at 97/98 but the actual port for the connection of the manifold to the heads remains the same.

V5, ie. my99 is when they changed the manifold port design such that you cannot use a RS or Early GC8 manifolds on the heads.

Sweet!

Ludwig my friend... you are again full of useful info. ;)
Many thanks guys.
