any manual gearbox that is 4.44 ratio will suit the existing rear R160 diff on the forester gt box

Only a Forester gearbox will have the correct speedo gear inside to suit the bigger tyres on a Forester. Any 4.44 box will fit, but the speedo will read under actual speed unless you fit the tyre diameter that came on the car that originally had the gearbox or split the case and swap the plastic gear. Forester GT's 4.44 also have different gear ratios to WRX's 4.44. They have the same set of gear ratios as a Aus 3.9 box but with the 4.44 final drive.

Unless you're 100% confident of the origins of the box you get do not assume anything. Check the tooth count on the crownwheel through the drain plug and check that it has 1 to 1 transfer gears.
