If I recall that was a good rig. The 80ies are a extreamly good machine & in the past the ones I have had for work never let me down. Be very mindfull if you have a good 80 it would be hard to replace as good ones are hard to find these days. They hold there value very well.

Had my '94 3L manual Surf for years now as a Boat/Jet-ski Tow car and a Daily+Bush Basher.

Confession time!

-Only changed oil/filter once in 55,000kms.
-Hardly ever wash after the beach or dunking in water.

Thing is, I bought this car with no intention to spend a cent on her unless absolutely necessary - and I haven't.

Nobody I know likes or respects a Hilux Surf. WHY?

They are dirt cheap and abundant. The parts are so easy to get!

The car is a mix of a Hilux and a Prado.
The 3L engine is the same as in a Prado - a 1KZ-TE (without an intercooler.)
The later Surfs even have a Prado chassis with a Hilux driveline.

BUT THEY ARE SO SO CHEAP. I want to buy a Prado or Landcruiser but not until this dies (If ever)

I love the creature comforts and luxury and they love the sand. Mine even has a Japanese air purifier on the roof inside. They are very torquey (but slowish) and a dream to drive. Good on fuel.

To be Honest I could of spent way more than twice as much on an early Australian Prado to have pretty much a similar if not better car (love the sunroof and back window and overall Hilux look).

I believe they are a highly undervalued car for people looking for something DIRT CHEAP and reliable and parts are either Hilux or Prado(Available everywhere).

Hilux Surf owners are often tight with the money.
For years I worked in the 4WD industry and we never sold anything to Surf owners, they wasted hours of our time and never bought anything.

^^ And they cry about their $8k injector pumps when they die.

And Google "cracked Toyota 1KZTE diesel heads" Before you consider buying one.

Your saying that injector pumps are $8000? Or is that a typo?

Rossco 12-01-2011 10:41 AM

That is correct $8k
