Well things have been slow thanks to the uni semester coming to a close but some progress has been made regardless. Have sorted out new coolant hardlines to replace the corroded units, and the heads have been mated back onto the block with new metal head gaskets and nitrated head studs. Will get stuck into some engine bay cleanup come December, just need to put an order through for all new coolant rubber hoses and a couple of seals, replace the rear main seal, get another timing belt kit, and start putting everything back together.

Amazing what a quick sandblast & paint can do to 17 year old brackets, pipes and crossmembers, might not look showroom new once it's done but should still be a heap tidier than it was. Used high temp/flameproof paint where appropriate, else its just standard enamel or acryllic I had laying about. Control arms came up nice with a bit of degreaser and a hand-wire brush. Yet to source all new rubber cooling system realted hoses but that'll be a job for the coming weeks, hopefully not too expensive through Subaru.

Manifold & coolant pipe just sitting on there for now, but I'm happy with the look

Progress may be slow, but progress is progress, right?

Replaced all upper coolant ancillary hoses with genuine new ones (thanks to Shaun at City Subaru for sorting those out!), cleaned every bolt head, re-wrapped the manifold harness, swapped out all accessories from my STI manifold onto the painted WRX one, cleaned everything I could get my hands on. Not a showstopper setup but looks a lot better than it did anyway!

Next up is to finish repainting half the engine bay due to a past battery acid spill, replace the rear main seal, change out the A/C compressor and condenser (still connected in the engine bay), and then start thinking about reassembly. Fun times indeed!

May also have just sent off a 2.5L crank for re-oil phasing...

Well, came across a strange issue while I was fitting up the tailshaft and shifter. I noticed patches of paint lifting off the barrels on my rear wheels caused by a brake fluid spill. Thought I hadn't tightened the banjo bolts on the calipers properly or it was because I was using single pot lines on 2 pot calipers, but looking closer the calipers were leaking where the two halves joined. Time for a rebuild!

What I thought was a leak caused by perished seals from the calipers sitting without fluid in them turned out to be much stranger. Of the four O-rings which seal the caliper halves together, only one was fitted, only two of the four piston dust seals were fitted, and the calipers had stainless steel pistons fitted with tool marks all over the outer lips. Seems my $100 Gumtree bargain wasn't such a sweet deal after all...

Anyway, some sandblasting, a decal kit, a Bigg Red seal kit, and some VHT caliper paint later and they're looking better already. Will have them assembled and back on the car this week.

Have also swapped the leaky brake booster, timing belt is on, turbo is back on with a new up pipe gasket, an acid spill in the engine bay has been tidied up, gearbox is in... getting there.

Been a while since I've updated this, but...

She's not finished, but it fired up today despite the ageing battery and old fuel. Few things to sort out still, have to go over the rear subframe for bolt tightness, the reverse lights don't work with the 6 speed plugged into the factory loom, and it needs a speed sensor wired up, but it's a huge step in the right direction!

EDIT: And thanks to Seagull for actually making it happen

I think the existing tune will be great as far as the bum dyno is concerned once it's back out on the road, I'm sure I'll have something else to tune once I start craving more power...
