Thanks Gordon, but at this point I want a locally built engine.
Mick at Japline is the strongest contender so far, just had a long no bullshit conversation with him about breaking and rebuilding subis.

You're not wrong there. After I recieve quotes from Galloways and Tokyos I should have enough ammo to make a decision.

Hey Nick, its been a long time, how are you mate?
I've only read the last couple of pages, because i'm a lazy fuck. But, if you have near on 70k on that motor considering the motorsport you compete in (or what I remember you doing), I think you've done well. That being said, why not just put another short block in? I think I know where your head's at & thats "its broken, or breaking, so I need to make it stronger & better"? The truth is, you could spend 20k & then end up spinning a bearing, snapping a timing belt, dropping a valve etc & end up with a fucked motor anyway. There are warranties I guess, but.... The comment on the rods is true a few posts ago. Think how much of a beating they've had & they should still be ok. As you also mentioned, if it ain't broke don't fix it. I haven't been around Subarus for a while now (well not my own) but I bet you could get a short block for under 2.5K. Head gaskets $200. ARP2000 head studs $300. Timing belt $200 & one of those cheap ass Taiwanese $150 seal kits. Put a set of pistons in if you like of standard bore size ~$800 as a bit of insurance. 3.5 - 4k plus maybe 2k labour. 5.5 - 6k. Check your heads, bolt them on & you should be good to go, get back out there, tearing it up, keeping Yokohama in business. Tune - Theoretically you don't need one, so long as the head gaskets you choose are the same thickness & the CR of the pistons is maintained to OEM specs - i know someone will pipe up about this, giving it the "you have to tune very time you change your spark plugs or oil" - Whatever. Get it run up on the dyno & check it once you've run it in, but only for peace of mind & maybe a touch up here & there. Or, the alternative is. Its only dropped 50psi, get some driving tips from Burke & you should be good for another 7 - 8 years on the motor you've got now. Take it easy mate. I might see you back out on there one day

HaHa you must be psychic dude, I was going to message you for some more soul searching advice!
All is well besides the dying donk, hope you and family are well. I have pages of ocd lists here with different build combos from professional engine builders and tuning shops through to backyard ops. Ironically last night I made a list which looked exactly like yours (new oem short block, pistons, headstuds, gaskets, timing belt). The only problem is who to get it done with. Who would you recommend to do it for $2k in labour mate? Serious question, PM me if you want. I want my engine built (or short block swapped) in a proper workshop if you know what I mean. Not because I don't trust peoples backyard skills but because if something goes wrong I have somewhere to go to have a rant! As for tuning I definitely want to push the little dom1.5 a bit further so it will need a re-tune after run in (targeting maybe 260-270kw) a little bit more than what I have now 240kw. That's why I have been weighing up whether to spend a bit more coin (for insurance purposes) and have the convenience of drive in/out service from some of the bigger name shops. The last two quotes came in this arvo. Galloways - $7186.00 for a completely reconditioned long motor with forged internals. Motor must be delivered to them. Maximums drive in/out between $10 - 11k depending on what bits and bobs get replaced or re-used. Burke? Who's Burke? Is he the dude with the big trophy cabinet?

Oops.
I rang Chris at Diversion Garage yesterday to order an oem short block, pistons, gaskets, studs etc to get the car back on the road quickly and painlessly. Somehow during that phone call I came away with one of these. My block will have standard size head studs and the closed deck block insert is different to the one pictured. This was the original design where Chris removed the factory webbing and pressed in the single insert that wrapped around the bores. The new design leaves the factory webbing supports in place and the inserts are divided into six sections around them to allow the bores to expand when they heat up up. I'm sure plenty of people will think this is too much engine for my goals. I can understand that but my little brothers words keep ringing in my ears ''do it once do it right meathead''. Chris said that he would be far happier with me in a block like this because I am on e85 and will be flogging the piss out of it at the track every chance I get. I also have zero intentions of selling the car, I have owned it for five years and still love driving it. Bla bla, bla... Yes yes on to the build porn, here you go. Build specs; 325Kw built short motor: Chemical bath all components Manley Platinum full forged pistons Manley H-tuff forged rods w/ARP rod studs Full CNC closed decking Race series bearings Crank grind/polish Deck cases Balance rotating assembly Clearance engine to DG specifications Final clean Assemble engine extras: Genuine Subaru gasket kit Genuine timing belt kit RCM 11mm extreme head studs Subaru genuine Timing belt kit RCM nitrile coated head gaskets STI oil pump Kiler B baffle plate Killer B oil pickup Cast impeller water pump Competition Clutch - stage 3. Process West surge tank. Turbosmart FPR-1200
