You shouldn't be able to give someone a piece of paper telling them how much they are getting paid have both people sign it and pay you at that rate for month, only to say sorry other people are upset about your pay level so were taking the rise off you.
Begs the question, shouldn't you be only buying stuff you can afford? I wouldnt go and quit this job until you have another job secured. Seen and signed a contract with the money you want. How is it a paycut, if you have more TRP/salary than what you had before the payrise, thats still a payrise, just a smaller one.

Fact of the matter is an employer signed a contract stating he would get X, then took it away. How is this fair when clearly the company is struggling to get by?

No I didn't brag. I work on a small site with a very gossipy receptionist who knows more than she should. And although I've never been one to hide what I get paid I'm definitely going to be more careful about it from now on.

I bought the car when I was able to afford it but since then the company has announced it is shutting my site down sometime in the near future. That was when I originally put thecar up for sale not knowing for certain my financial future. However when I received my pay rise I worked out I would be able to afford the car again. But pay cut, and it is a pay cut because there was a signed paper and I was already being paid at the rate agreed, now reduces my finance options and The car will have to go back up for sale.

i guess its a hard lesson learnt- pay rates are always a private matter, unless your glued to a union, if so, lesson learnt on not being a member of them either!

golden rule mate...noone knows how much you earn other than you (and your partner). Work friendships can turn sour very quickly and the less other people know the better.

Also "chatting up" receptionists/pointing out how much you pay is an absolute sin. Receptionists usually get paid much less than you so she will complain/gossip to others and if you kick up a stink she will accuse you of sexual harrasment or something. Receptionists are there to look pretty but never to be approached

Haha it wasn't chatting up. Because were such a small site she is basically the payroll person aswell. So she knows how much everyone gets paid.

I agree. Well maybe not about the cunts part, but definitely the bit about it being very shit for anyone.

If the same thing happened to me at my workplace, they may as well just fire me on the spot. The result would be the same.
There is no way I would be able to stay there after that. It's insulting and completely demoralising and I would feel forever pissed off. The ability to work at 100% would go right out the window.
