Question Which brake pads to get??

having so much trouble deciding which brake pads to get...

06 STi, current brakes are screaming like a #$%!% and have to change them.

I will use the car for some occasional track days like maybe 2-4 times a year max and not the serious racing type but just try your car out on a track sort.

Not sure what to get between Bendix Ultimates, QFM A1RM, or the OEM Brembo pads.

The Bendix ultimates seem like a good choice for not being noisy and all but I'm wondering if they would hold on the occasional track thrash?
Considering the QFM A1RMs but not sure if they will scream like the current pads(which I have no idea what they are).

I've also found the OEM Brembo Ceramic Steel STi pads that come with it when brand new, on ebay for relatively cheap (compared to what the Subaru dealer wants to charge for them)...They are probably the best pads for this car/caliper but will they hold on the occasional track thrash?

I've also heard of Project Mu pads...

I need some advice from experienced STi-ers... I want pads that will work well day to day, last long enough, stand the occasional track thrash, and don't scream like a *%$#!(&*&

You will get many different responses to this question.

The current pads may just be screaming because they are glazed.
Have you had a look to see how much brake pad is left?

Personally I have used the QFM's and not had an issue with them screaming ever on the road or track.
I will be changing to something else as I want a bit more bite when on track. I will be trying the Project
Mu's next. But my experience is based on WRX 4 pots, not Brembos.

Call STechnic and ask their advice based on your needs.
They have driven/raced pretty much everything Subaru.

Hey thanks for the info.

Did you mean the QFM A1RMs or the HPXs?

I just bought the QFM HPXs instead of the A1RMs just because my track use will be minimal and I think the HPXs will be easier to live with on day to day driving.

Also took some advice from MaximumMotorsport, they really gave me a good idea on what the best ones are. They know what they're talking about.

Also the ProjectMu pads are apparently great also but a little pricey, then again couldn't get the part number from the PMu website as to what I should use on the rears, plus the .com.au site is a bit of a nightmare to order online.

Apparently the A1RMs take a few stops to get to optimal friction from cold and are a little noisy(and dusty compared to the HPXs), got the info from QFM in Queensland. So I thought I might be better off with the HPXs which will be fine for the occasional track day too :-)

PMU B-stop for street or PMU RC09 for track.

Have used bendix ultimates all round, and they are still on the rear.

A1RMs on the front twice, and currently.

Used on the track and on the street. From cold the A1RMs to take an application to be totally effective, but no real issues.

Brake dust, it's always there no matter what you run, advantage with black/dark rims.

I'm a Dixcel fan. Type M fot street (almost dustless) and Type Z for track.

To quote Josh from Stechnics - "any pad in Brembos are noisy".

My Dixcel Type M are only noisy in reverse.

On my second set of QFM A1RMs and DBA 4000s on the front.

They can be very loud but I think the choices are limited if you want a pad that gives good cold performance for a daily AND delivers track performance.
GTB Liberty likes this.

Jeckle,

Cheers for the info.

I guess I'll try the A1RMs next time, from what QFM told me is that there could be a little bit of noise in the STis so as its the screaming of my current brakes thats doing my head in I thought try the HPXs(which are meant to be very ok for road and a bit of track much better than the Bendix), apparently from reviews the HPXs are really good on noise and almost no dust!

I'll update next week sometime when I have them on :-)

I ran A1RM's twice, first time, no problems.

Second time, pulled them out after 500K's. Squeal was unbearable, and i mean - You can hear me braking 300m down the road, no matter how hot or cold they were, or what speed you are going. When we pulled them out, the amount of metal content in the pads was pretty full on.

More of a race pad, than a street/track pad. I thought I had a bad batch of pads or something.

If you want to try them, you can have my set (for $50) that are sitting here doing nothing.

I am back onto Ultimates all round now, and they feel nice, brake dust is pretty epic though.

Not a fan of OEM Brembo pads,

HUGE amounts of dust.

Have EBC red stuff on the front, and they are doing really well with practically zero dust.

QFM are good, as are Bendix.

Choose away
