Hello all,
As a new WRX (MY12 STI Spec R) owner and member of the Perth WRX forum I wanted to take the chance to introduce myself and thank the members for all wisdom contained within the threads (and the sh!t that makes you laugh). I have to say a month into my WRX ownership I am rather impressed with just how fun these cars are to drive. I initially paid the extra dollars on the STI intending not to modify it. But the more I research some of what you guys are doing to and getting out of stock WRX & STI's the more my mind starts day dreaming getting even more out of an already great car. One disappointment however is the spec R media centre... Common Subaru, I paid a lot extra for this and you provide a sat nav with outdated maps & rubbish user interface, bluetooth phone but not streaming media and "10 speakers" none of which have any hint of bottom end. Which brings me to the following questions to the forum: - media centre; expensive OEM option that should have been standard. Is this any good? I hear the user interface is rubbish. Intended to use with Iphone 4. - To correct the lack of bottom end I was looking at the OEM under seat sub. Which is also extremely expensive (for what you get) and I have read it provides little or no difference. Can anyone recommend an alternative? I have looked into an aftermarket 10 inch underseat option at $450 installed but unsure how much difference would make. Not after much, just enough to correct the missing range. Thanks guys |

Welcome Mate. I know nothing about '08s but thought I'd be friendly anyway.
SyncSubaru is upgrading the sound system in his MY11/12 Impreza, including an underseat sub, if you check his thread out you might get some good ideas. |

Welcome.
There's no real substitution for a decent low end in my opinion (underseat/slim subs, etc). It's all about moving air and the size of the enclosure so it really comes down to: a) how fussy you are and exactly how much bass you're expecting b) what sort of music you listen to. If you listen to anything electronica based, then you will probably want an enclosure in the boot. Anything else where all you need is a little "kick", then a substitute may well suffice. I have a 1.25cu enclosure with a 12" sub in the back of my '08 wrx. It's heavy, but easily removed for when/if I ever do a track day due to using straps to hold it in place.

Have a read mate. I just did the same thing as you with the Sound System. Saved a bucket load too. Only drama at the moment is what I will do about DVD's should I decide I want to watch em. I have the pictures ready to go for the Subwoofer install - just need to write it up this week. I can tell you with 100% Confidence that the under-seat unit makes a massive improvement. Ask Soksta for confirmation if you dont believe me - his reputation around here is in uber research before spending any money (Tightarse!) but it always pays off for him in the end. |

There is a rather substantial improvement with the audio in the car now, subwoofer that was chosen seems to be doing a decent job and my guess is that there could be some gains to be had with some fine tuning of the stereo. Wouldn't say tightarse Cam, I don't mind spending money, but after wasting a bit of it in the past, I would happily spend money on quality components or setups. Oh and welcome to the club! I'm sure you will enjoy it and the car (more so the car ) and hope to see you around on one of the cruises or track days!

forget the OEM crap, just go to jb hifi, get yourself decent set of speakers, sub, 4 chan and mono amps and be done, buy all and get fitted for roughly under a grand.
but then ask around as a cashie to get someone to tune the amps to its peak, i found mates gettin there gear installed and amps hardly even been pushed to what its made for |
