Exactly, the spent rods unfortunately only have a half life, where they never really loose their radioactivity but when it comes down to it, how many holes have we dug in the ground? As Chrus has pointed out they are stored properly. There is no reason why shouldn't be using nuclear power except for backwards thinking. Nuclear power is one of the most cleanest ways to produce power for our needs now and the future. Sure I'd love to use, wind/solar/tidal power but unfortunately they don't produce near enough power for the worlds needs atm, until someone figures out cold fusion, we are stuck with fission.
