When we got our VS senator (215 stroker) the first drive was to waroona and back (for work) a mixture of revs and loads was recommended.
Most manufacturers just tell you to vary the load, not sit at a constant rpm for prolonged time-frames and not over rev the motor (redline in every gear).

mineral oil seems to be the go for starters and then fully synthetic.

When my dad bought his VY SS ute, I got to drive the car for much of the run in..... basically I used full throttle all the time when taking off, but let off about 2000rpm short of the revlimiter (which is 6000rpm). I also made an effort to drive up lots of hills in a higher gear.

Seems to have worked well as it hasn't burnt a drop of oil in its 5 years
